U.S. life expectancy is falling behind |
A new study on the dismal mortality rate in the United States is out, and it’s bleak. The analysis investigates life expectancy and age-based mortality from 1999 through 2023, gleaned from data gathered by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, and other sources. |
The chasm between life expectancy in the United States and other developed countries has been widening for some time, and it appears to be getting worse. In 1980, only 13 countries with a population over a million ranked higher than the United States in life expectancy. But decade by decade that number ratcheted up. According to data from 2023, we’re now 38th on that list. |
