BIG FROG 104'S HOT NEWZ FROM NASHVILLE

August 31, 2010

» Tube Pasted: Wednesday morning (9/1) may be the only time the entire country music world is in one place. Well, if sitting in front of their television sets counts. Dierks Bentley and Miranda Lambert will be on Good Morning America revealing the final portion of nominees for the 44th Annual CMA Awards. The first half of the nominations list will be read Tuesday (8/31) by Justin Moore and Chris Young at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. One thing we do know about the Nov. 10 show, it will be hosted, again, by Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley. But you don't have to wait until then to get your country fix ...

That's because ABC-TV is airing CMA Music Festival: Country's Night To Rock Wednesday (9/1). Tim McGraw hosts the three-hour primetime concert special, which will coincide with a Tweet 'N' Greet at ABC.com. What's a Tweet 'N' Greet, you ask? Think lots of stars tweeting in unison: Julianne Hough (@JulianneHough), Lady Antebellum (@ladyantebellum), Reba (@Reba), McGraw (@TimMcGrawArtist), Blake Shelton (@BlakeShelton), Keith Urban (@KeithUrban) and Zac Brown Band (@ZacBrownBand) will all be posting behind-the-scenes scoop during the telecast. "The CMA Music Fest is our time to give back to the people who give us a job all year long," performer Lambert says. "They come out and buy tickets and support us and buy records, so it's our time to thank them for what they do. I used to come to Fan Fair as a fan so I know how important it is." Learn more and watch online exclusive content from the June 10-13 event here.

» Kennebunked: What seemed like most of the population of Kennebunk, ME turned out bayside for Taylor Swift's MTV takeover Friday (8/27). Swift premiered her video "Mine" and during the 30-minute special, told behind-the-scenes stories of putting the clip together. "These little kids in the video – who I've nicknamed 'The Littles' – they're my character's future kids," Swift says. "They were all really fun to have on the set and so I had this little party just for them at my house to see the video first. They all have big families, so we invited everyone [and it was] like 25 kids piled up on the couch watching the video for the first time. And they all screamed when they saw themselves." Swift handpicked each child actor from random places including an autograph signing line during the CMA Music Festival three years ago and a Nashville ice cream stand. Watch the entire special on-demand here. Watch the video here. Swift is also the focus of an Entertainment Weekly Q&A (click here).

» For Those About To Rock: Martina McBride has been getting hip to her inner rock goddess recording with the likes of Kid Rock and the Eurhythmics' Dave Stewart. McBride collaborated with Kid Rock and T.I. for the upcoming song "Care," which is due out Nov. 16. And McBride blogged about working with Stewart at her husband's Blackbird Studios in Nashville. "John [McBride] engineered and mixed the new solo album by Stewart," McBride writes. "It is so great, and you should hear it when it comes out ... I sang a duet with Dave, and it came out great. It's called 'All Messed Up On Love.' Dave recorded 15 songs in five days at Blackbird (quite a different pace from the way we make country albums) ... John loved it and it sounds great!" Read the full blog here.

» Weed The Fine Print: Emcee Vince Gill and other stars literally sang the praises of Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson and veteran record producer Fred Foster during a private industry event Sunday (8/29) in Nashville. Dolly Parton, Lee Ann Womack, Jamey Johnson, Rodney Crowell, Lorrie Morgan, Lyle Lovett and Randy Travis performed during the two-hour gala in tribute to the trio's groundbreaking contributions to music. "Without them, none of us would be here tonight ... because Willie had the good [stuff]," Gill joked. One speaker recalled asking Willie what he thought his bus would say if it could talk. "If it could talk," Nelson replied, "I would shoot it." Read more here.

» The Guitar Song: Not only did Jerrod Niemann take home several plaques after last week's No. 1 celebration for "Lover Lover," the song's original writer Daniel Pritzker (frontman for the band Sonia Dada) gave him a very cool and very old present. "Daniel was kind enough to not only show up at the No. 1 party and celebrate with us, but he gave me a 1957 Gibson J-185 guitar," Niemann says. "And then to top it off, I understand it's the guitar that 'Lover, Lover' was actually written on ... I said, 'Thank you,' and 'Are you crazy?' I do not deserve this guitar. If he asks for it back, I'd definitely give to him because it's just that awesome of a guitar. But in the meantime, I'm going to be picking and grinning and giggling and whatever else you do with a guitar that is worth more than your car."

» Songs About Me: As if Trace Adkins' Aug. 17 studio album Cowboy's Back In Town isn't enough, the "Dangerous Man" will have a double disc of hits out this fall. The Definitive Greatest Hits: Til The Last Shot's Fired drops Oct. 12 and will feature 28 of Adkins' most popular songs including "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk," "You're Gonna Miss This," "(This Ain't No) Thinkin' Thing," "Ladies Love Country Boys" and "Hot Mama."

» In Case You Missed It: While co-hosting Friday's (8/27) Today show, Josh Turner and wife Jennifer spilled the beans that they are expecting their third boy. Turner also shared a New York sweet tea with anchor Hoda Kotb, discussed his vocal range and kids' fashions and performed "Why Don't We Just Dance." Watch here. Also in Manhattan Friday (8/27), Lady Antebellum discussed their rise to prominence and performed "Our Kind Of Love" and "Need You Now" on ABC-TV's Good Morning America.

Don’t miss Merle Haggard on Letterman

Posted: 30 Aug 2010 11:06 AM PDT

Legendary country artist and outlaw conspirator Merle Haggard will appear on The Late Show with David Letterman on Tuesday, Aug. 31, at 11:30 p.m. Known for writing anthems like "Okie From Muskogee," "The Fightin' Side of Me" and "Mama Tried," Haggard released his latest album, I Am What I Am, in April.

Frank Ortega releases new single, ‘My Old Man’

Posted: 30 Aug 2010 06:25 AM PDT

Villa One/Quarterback Records artist Frank Ortega prepares to release his new single, "My Old Man," followed by heavy radio touring and a new video to be filmed in mid-September. Written and produced by two hit songwriters — Phil O'Donnell and Gary Hannan — "My Old Man" pays homage to the complex relationship between a man and his father — and Ortega's energy and raw emotion provide a perfect vehicle for the compelling lyrics.

"This song is a powerful anthem for millions of people — men in particular — about their daddies," Ortega said in a release. "My own dad has not been in the best of health over the past few years and recently had to undergo emergency quadruple bypass heart surgery; we thought we were going to lose him. I feel very close to this song: he served his country; I literally 'held that drop light steady when it got dark or I heard about it all night long' just like the song says; he also bought me my first guitar. This song found me, I didn't find it."

Ortega’s most known for his indie hit, "Hot Women, Cold Beer."  His new single will be released on his debut album due out next year.

Hello Music Seeks Acts to Perform Live at Huge Country Music Festival in Las Vegas

Headliners include Montgomery Gentry, Glen Campbell, Lonestar, and Kenny Rogers. Six artists needed to perform at destination country music festival.
Hello Music is putting six artists on stage at the Nevada Wild Fest in Las Vegas, featuring Montgomery Gentry, Lonestar, Glen Campbell, Kenny Rogers and other greats this October 15 - 17. We're looking for great musicians who play country, alt-country, southern rock, Americana, roots, bluegrass and everything in between! Check out this brand new festival at www.nevadawildfest.com.

We at Hello Music were stoked when our friends at the Nevada Wild Fest told us they wanted us to find bands to play in front of an audience of thousands. We love to give emerging acts exposure, and this could be a big break for a new artist or an opportunity for a veteran to play to a huge new crowd.

Like many of our partners, the festival was attracted to us by our day-to-day mission: sifting through thousands of small and unsigned artists, trying to find talented performers and great songs so we can match them with opportunities.

It's free to sign up and submit music to Hello Music, and we do more than just help musicians get gigs. We've landed songs in video games, ad campaigns and on Internet radio; we pitch our best stuff to music supervisors and record labels; we even get artists discounts on common services like digital distribution. We send feedback to every artist who sends us a release.

It's a win-win: musicians get feedback and opportunities, while our partners hear the best unsigned music in the world.
THINK YOU'VE GOT IT?

BIG FROG 104'S HOT NEWZ FROM NASHVILLE

August 27, 2010

» Circle. Un. Broken. Grand Ole Opry members Brad Paisley and Little Jimmy Dickens helped return the pine circle cutout from the original Ryman Auditorium stage to the restored Grand Ole Opry House this week. The stage and symbolic circle of wood were under almost four feet of water during May's flood, but Wednesday's (8/25) emotional press conference announced the venue will reopen Sept. 28. Trace Adkins, Jason Aldean, Dierks Bentley, Charlie Daniels Band, Diamond Rio, Del McCoury Band, Montgomery Gentry, Blake Shelton, Mel Tillis and Josh Turner will join Paisley and Dickens for the Opry performance. The venerable show has been staged in several other venues including the Ryman since the Opry House was damaged.

"This is indeed an iconic music institution that is extremely important to our city's tourism, our history and our identity," Nashville Mayor Karl Dean said at the event. "One of the great stories that came out of the floods is the fact that the Grand Ole Opry never stopped ... that is an incredible statement and message to the rest of the country about the resilience of the country music industry, of Gaylord [Entertainment], of this institution and of our entire city."

Paisley and Dickens closed the ceremony by placing the flooring back in its home and performed the anthem "Will The Circle Be Unbroken." "I thought last night, 'I should bring a guitar,'" Paisley said. "This [venue] shouldn't sit there silent for the next month." The Opry House opening is the first of several Opry events including the Spirit Of Nashville Day (10/2), the 85th Birthday Bash (10/8-9), Opry Goes Pink (10/15) and others. Details here.

» Pretty Good At Being Here: While recording his upcoming album Enjoy Yourself, Billy Currington sought some changes in latitudes to make the title more authentic. He was well into recording in Nashville when Jimmy Buffett's Key West, FL Shrimpboat Sound studios became available. Yes, the same studio complex where George Strait, Alan Jackson and Buffett have made records. Currington didn't need much convincing. "It was a blessing," he says of moving album production to the Keys. "The tropics work for me personally. It lays me back [and] when I get in that spot, it's really the best time to work. I would go from the beach straight to the studio and the back to the beach. It was something I've never done before. I was late all the time. [Well], not all the time, but it's definitely hard to get me off the beach." Enjoy Yourself features his single "Pretty Good At Drinkin' Beer" and hits stores Sept. 21.

» Threepeat: The 44th Annual CMA Awards will be thrice as nice for Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley, who will host for the third consecutive year. "The CMAs are different from any other awards night," Paisley says. "You're looking at a roomful of people who love each other. And any new viewer will be pleasantly surprised at what they relate to on the Awards and what they like that they had no idea they would like. For that reason alone, this is the most important night of the year for country music." Underwood agrees, "It's all about country music. This is our community .... It's great to come here and celebrate that every year." The CMAs air live from Nashville's Bridgestone Arena Nov. 10 at 8pm ET on ABC-TV. Nominees for the top categories will be revealed during next Wednesday's (9/1) Good Morning America on ABC-TV, with all other categories being revealed Tuesday (8/31).

» Homeboy Of Fall: Kenny Chesney surprised his alma mater's football team Wednesday (8/25) in Corryton, TN with an early screening of his football documentary Boys Of Fall. "You all grew up just like us," Chesney told the Gibbs High School Eagles. "You drive the same road we drove. You obviously played on the same football field we played on and walked through the same halls. So, it's really a special time for me to come here and play you guys this." Watch the WVLT-TV clip here. The 60-minute Boys Of Fall doc features interviews with football greats Sean Payton, Brett Favre, Peyton Manning, John Madden, Tony Dungy, Bill Parcells, Nick Saban, Mack Brown, Jim Tressel and Bobby Bowden. BOF premieres on ESPN-TV Sunday (8/29) at 2pm ET.

» Faith, Hope & Loads: As Tide's Loads Of Hope ambassador, Faith Hill unloaded a night of free music Tuesday (8/24) in New Orleans to commemorate the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. "This city inspires great music, and sometimes when I get together with my band, I never know what will happen," Hill told the crowd. "We want you to just sit back and forget about it all and just have a great time." Roughly 2,200 tickets were given out in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, LA, and Biloxi, MS. Read the Associated Press review here.

» In Case You Missed It: Blake Shelton, Martina McBride, John Rich and Trisha Yearwood anchored some saucy segments this week as Today show guest co-hosts. Shelton, McBride, Rich and Yearwood filled in for a vacationing Kathie Lee Gifford and dished about current events over their favorite cocktails (Shelton — Bacardi and Coke; McBride — Tequila; Rich — Crown Royal and Coke; Yearwood — white wine). Wednesday's (8/25) Good Morning America hosted Little Big Town, who discussed their album The Reason Why and performed the title track and "Little White Church." Julie Roberts was the focus of Thursday's (8/26) GMA piece "Road To Recovery: Nashville," which followed rebuilding efforts after the Middle Tennessee floods.

» Arose By Any Other Name: The year's top five biggest and brightest country music stars will get the VIP-treatment courtesy of CMT and the network's inaugural CMT Artists Of The Year special Dec. 3. "Make no mistake: This is not an awards show or a competition, but a year-end party on a grand scale," CMT's John Hamlin says. "CMT Artists Of The Year celebrates the artists what made this year a great one for country music. It's their night because it's been their year, and they deserve to be wined, dined and entertained like no other evening anywhere else." The event will "take place in an elegant, yet relaxed setting that allows attendees to kick back, cut loose and enjoy the show." Performers and host are tba. CMT Artists Of The Year follows the Nov. 10 CMA Awards on ABC-TV and precedes the Dec. 6 American Country Awards on FOX-TV.

» Don't Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go: How did country fare in VH1's "Greatest Artists Of All Time" poll? Well, Johnny Cash checks in at No. 35 and ... that's it. Seriously. The network asked "well-known music artists and music experts" to help compile the list, with Carrie Underwood being the only country performer mentioned as a participant. And while few would argue with the top five selections — the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones and Michael Jackson — what about Hank Williams, Willie, Waylon or Merle? Radiohead (29) over Garth Brooks? Sade (50) over Patsy Cline? Whitney Houston makes the list (60), but Dolly Parton, who wrote her biggest hit "I Will Always Love You," doesn't? Don't the musical accomplishments of Toby Keith, Kenny Chesney, Alabama or Taylor Swift compare favorably with Justin Timberlake (66), George Michael (87), Outkast (95) or Alicia Keys (100)? The upside of this lack of respect for country: You probably won't care if we don't tell you when the VH1 special airs.

» Crib Note: Congrats to new parents James Otto and wife Amy on the birth of their daughter Ava Katherine Otto, who was welcomed to the world Tuesday night (8/24) at a Nashville hospital. "We can't believe Ava is finally here," James says. "She is beautiful like her mama, and I'm already wrapped around her tiny finger." Of course, this also means diaper duty for Rascal Flatts' Jay DeMarcus, who is Ava's uncle. "I'm an uncle," DeMarcus announced over Twitter. "Send my bro James some love!!!" In case you missed the connection, James' wife Amy and Jay's wife Allison (who is also expecting) are sisters.
