Your hair may not simply be “falling out.” Something interesting can be changing inside its growth cycle.
You look in the mirror one morning.
Everything seems normal.
And then the light hits the top of your head at precisely the wrong angle.
And suddenly you're thinking...
Excuse me. Was that much scalp always visible?!

Maybe your ponytail isn't quite as thick as it used to be.
Maybe your part seems wider.
Maybe the hair around your temples looks a little thinner.
Or maybe your hair is still there... but the individual strands simply don't feel as thick as they once did.
Hair changes are incredibly common as we get older.
But here's the interesting part:
Your hair may not simply be “falling out.”
Something can also be changing in the way your hair grows.
Because every hair on your head is participating in its own little biological cycle.
And apparently... none of them bothered to synchronize their calendars. 😂
Your hair is constantly cycling.
Hair doesn't grow forever. Each follicle repeatedly moves through different stages.
The longest is the anagen phase—the active growth phase. During anagen, cells inside the follicle are rapidly dividing and the hair strand continues getting longer. A scalp hair can remain in this growth phase for years.
Eventually, that follicle transitions into a short phase called catagen. Growth slows and the follicle begins changing.
Then comes telogen—a resting phase. Finally, the old hair sheds and, under normal circumstances, the follicle eventually begins another growth cycle.
So yes... losing some hair every day is completely normal.
Your shower drain is not necessarily delivering devastating news. 😂
The important question is what happens during the next cycle.
Because aging can change the cycle.
As we get older, some follicles may spend less time actively growing hair. Some can remain in resting phases longer. And some follicles gradually become smaller.
When that happens, the new strand produced by the follicle may be thinner, shorter, finer, or slower growing.
So imagine one follicle that once produced a thick strand of hair. Over time, that same follicle may begin producing a much finer strand.
The hair is technically still there. But when thousands of follicles begin producing finer hairs... your overall hair density can look very different.
Hormones can play a role too.
Hair follicles respond to chemical signals throughout the body. And those signals change as we age.
For women, hormonal changes surrounding menopause can affect hair growth and density. For both men and women, genetics and sensitivity to certain hormones can contribute to what's known as pattern hair loss.
That's one reason thinning doesn't always happen evenly. Some people notice it around the temples. Others see a widening part. Others notice thinning across the crown.
And some people maintain an impressive head of hair well into their 80s while the rest of us stare at them suspiciously. 😂
Hair also changes texture.
Aging hair may become finer, drier, more fragile, less pigmented, and sometimes completely different in texture.
Hair that was once straight may become wavier. Hair that was once thick may become softer and finer.
And occasionally one single hair will emerge with the thickness and determination of a piece of fishing line. Usually somewhere extremely visible. 😂
That's because the follicle itself changes over time. Sebaceous glands in the scalp can also produce less oil, which may make hair feel drier. And reduced pigment production eventually gives us gray or white hair.
So when someone says: “My hair just isn't the same anymore.” They're probably right.
Nutrition matters—but hair is complicated.
Hair follicles are metabolically active little structures. Growing hair requires energy and nutrients.
Protein, iron, zinc, and other nutrients all play roles in normal hair biology. But that doesn't mean every case of thinning hair can be solved by eating one magical food or taking one magical supplement.
Hair changes can have many causes. And sometimes the timing provides an important clue.
Sudden hair loss is different from gradual thinning.
Gradual changes over years can occur with normal aging and inherited hair-loss patterns.
But if you suddenly begin shedding much more hair than usual, if hair is coming out in handfuls, if you develop distinct bald patches, or if hair loss comes with scalp pain, redness, scaling, or other symptoms, it's worth discussing with a healthcare professional.
Illness. Major stress. Rapid weight loss. Hormonal changes. Certain medications. Thyroid problems. Nutritional deficiencies. And other health conditions can all influence hair growth.
Sometimes the hair change isn't the problem itself. It's information. And that's an important distinction.
There's also a frustrating delay.
Your hair doesn't always react immediately to something happening inside your body. Changes in the hair-growth cycle can mean noticeable shedding appears weeks or even months after a trigger.
Which can make figuring out the cause feel like detective work.
You're standing in the shower thinking: WHAT DID I DO?!
And your hair is responding: Well...what were you doing three months ago? 😂
Not particularly helpful.
But here's what I find fascinating.
The hair you see is only the visible part of an incredibly active process happening beneath your skin.
Right now, thousands of follicles across your scalp are in different stages. Some are growing. Some are transitioning. Some are resting. Some are releasing an old strand. And others are preparing to begin again.
You don't notice any of it. You just wake up, brush your hair, and occasionally become personally offended by your bathroom lighting. 😂
Aging can change that cycle. Genetics can change it. Hormones can influence it. Nutrition and health can influence it.
But understanding what's happening gives us something much more useful than panic. It gives us context.
Your hair isn't simply decoration sitting on top of your head.
It's evidence of a remarkable little growth cycle that's been repeating itself for decades.
And frankly... those follicles have been working overtime without so much as a lunch break. 😂
