There aren't tiny fireworks behind your eyelids. So what exactly are you seeing?
You close your eyes.
Give them a little rub.
And suddenly...
there's a private fireworks show happening inside your head.
Tiny flashes.
Sparkles.
Swirls.
Little bursts of light.
Maybe even some strange colorful shapes.
Which raises an obvious question:
How are you seeing light when your eyes are closed?
Because unless something has gone terribly wrong...
there are no tiny fireworks behind your eyelids. 😂
What you're seeing are often called phosphenes—the sensation of seeing light when actual light isn't entering your eye in the usual way.
And to understand why they happen, we have to talk about something pretty remarkable.
Your eyes don't actually “see.”
Your brain does.
Your eyes collect information.
Light enters through the front of your eye and eventually reaches the retina, a thin layer of light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye.
Specialized cells in the retina respond to light and convert that information into electrical signals.
Those signals travel through your optic nerve to your brain.
And your brain interprets them as:
Here's what you're looking at.
It's happening so seamlessly that you experience it simply as vision.
But here's where things get weird.
Your brain doesn't necessarily know why those visual cells were stimulated.
Normally, light stimulates the retina.
But physical pressure can stimulate parts of your visual system too.
So when you rub or press on a closed eye, that mechanical pressure can trigger activity that your brain interprets the way it usually interprets retinal activity:
LIGHT!
Except...
there wasn't any light.
Your visual system basically received a signal and didn't ask enough follow-up questions. 😂
That's why you may see flashes, dots, rings, zigzags, or strange patterns while rubbing your eyes.
And those patterns can move.
Have you ever noticed that the little lights sometimes seem to shift as you move your fingers?
That's another clue that you're physically stimulating the eye.
The location and pressure change.
Different areas of the retina may be affected.
And the pattern you perceive changes with them.
Which means you can essentially poke your visual system...
and your brain responds by creating abstract art. 😂
But here's where we need to make an important distinction.
Seeing temporary sparkles or patterns while you're actively rubbing your closed eyes is one thing.
Seeing new flashes of light when you aren't touching your eyes is different.
Especially if those flashes appear suddenly or are accompanied by:
A sudden increase in floaters.
A dark curtain or shadow across part of your vision.
Loss of peripheral vision.
Or a noticeable change in vision.
Those symptoms can sometimes occur with a retinal tear or retinal detachment and deserve prompt eye care.
So this is one of those fascinating body quirks where context matters enormously.
I rubbed my eyes and saw sparkles for a few seconds?
Interesting biology.
I'm suddenly seeing unexplained flashes and a bunch of new floaters?
That's not something to shrug off as another weird aging thing.
And please don't start pressing on your eyeballs for science.

Your eyes are delicate.
You don't need to recreate the experiment.
If you've experienced phosphenes while rubbing your eyes before, you already know exactly what we're talking about.
And vigorous or repeated eye rubbing isn't a great habit anyway.
If your eyes frequently itch or feel irritated enough that you're rubbing them a lot, it's worth figuring out what's making them uncomfortable.
But there's something bigger hiding inside this little phenomenon.
We tend to think vision works like a camera.
Eyes open.
Picture comes in.
Brain sees picture.
But that's not really what's happening.
Your brain is constantly constructing your visual experience from electrical information arriving from your eyes.
Color.
Movement.
Depth.
Shape.
Brightness.
Contrast.
Your brain takes an enormous stream of signals and somehow turns it into the world you see around you.
Most of the time, you never notice the processing.
You simply...
see.
And then occasionally you rub your eyes and accidentally expose the backstage crew. 😂
For a few seconds, you get this strange reminder:
What you experience as vision isn't simply light entering your eyes.
It's your brain making sense of signals.
And sometimes...
your brain sees fireworks where absolutely no fireworks exist.
