The order of your meal may affect what happens after the first bite.
Imagine two plates with exactly the same food.
Same vegetables. Same chicken. Same potato. Same everything.
But one person eats the vegetables and chicken first and saves the potato for later. The other starts with the potato.
Could something that simple actually make a difference?
Research on something called meal sequencing suggests that, in some situations, it can.
When carbohydrates are eaten after vegetables and protein rather than first, studies have found differences in the rise in blood glucose that follows the meal.
And here's what makes that interesting:
Nobody had to remove the carbohydrate.
Nobody declared war on potatoes.
Nobody had to eat a sad little plate of lettuce while everyone else enjoyed dinner.
They simply changed the order.
Why might that matter? Fiber, protein, and fat all influence digestion in different ways. Eating vegetables and protein first may help slow how quickly glucose from the meal reaches the bloodstream.
That doesn't mean there's one magical order everyone must follow. Your overall diet, portions, activity, medications, and individual metabolism matter far more than whether your broccoli crossed the finish line before your potato.
Healthy eating isn't always about removing something. Sometimes a tiny change in how you eat is worth exploring.
