                                     STORY   BEHIND   THE   SONG

Most songwriters are usually very proud of their songs, but according to co-writer Larry Butler, Chips Moman was not quite that fond of their co-written "Hey, Won't You Play Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song."

Moman had the original idea for the song and he and Butler wrote it together in about 20 minutes one evening.

Butler commented, "Chips was a little embarrassed about the song. He just wasn't sure it was all that good. I was wanting to produce the song with another artist but he kept holding it, wanting B.J. Thomas to cut it. But he kept putting off showing it to him.  We were all but finished with the "Reunion" album before Chips even played the song to B.J. But when he finally did—B.J. like it, recorded it, and it was a big record."

B. J. Thomas' ABC Records single, "Hey Won't You Play Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song" hit the top spot on the pop charts on April 26th, 1975 and then did the same on the country music charts the week of May 17th.

Six days later, it was certified as B.J.'s third million selling single.

                                  QUESTIONS    AND    ANSWERS

Q:    Do you know if Bill Anderson ever recorded a song titled "The Wild Side Of Life?" My dad says he heard Bill sing it on the radio years ago.

A:    Bill Anderson's version of "Wild Side Of Life" was in his 1965 "Bright Lights & Country Music" album

Q:    Charley Pride's "I'd Rather Love You" was my dad's favorite song. Do you know who wrote it?

A:    "I'd Rather Love You" was written by Johnny Duncan.

Q:    My dad talked about dancing to the tune of Hank Thompson's "Green Light" in the Texas danced halls back in the late 1940's. But I bought what I thought was a new copy of that record in the 1950's. Was it re-released?

A:    Hank's original "Green Light" peaked at # 7 in 1948. He re-recorded the song and re-titled it "The New Green Light" in 1954, which made it to # 3.

Q:    My brother in law's favorite record is "Workin' At The Car Wash Blues" and he says that Jerry Reed had the only hit on that song. Is that true?

A:    Reed's version made the charts as the flipside of his 1980 #36 hit, "Age." The only other charted version was Tony Booth's # 27 in 1974

Q:     Did George Jones  record the Dave Dudley hit song "Six Days On The Road?" My mom says it was played on the radio years ago.

A:     Jones' version of "Six Days On The Road" was a track in his 1966 "Love Bug" album.

Q:     There is a very pretty song titled "Things" that has been around for a number of years. Do you know if anyone had a hit on that tune?

A:      "Things" was a # 49 hit in 1972 for Buddy Alan, # 25 in 1975 for Ronnie Dove and a # 22 in 1976 for Anne Murray.

HOME IS A PLACE IN MY MIND.

      By: Jack Blanchard

I wasn't raised around Country music,
but I chose it as my life's work because I like it,
because it fits my voice and writing style,
and because I'm too nervous to steal.

I grew up in a city
and was exposed to very little Country music.
When I first heard Hank Snow, Ernest Tubb, and Lefty Frizzell,
I was fascinated!
Maybe you were brought up on Country music,
but to me it was a whole new thing!

The imagery in the lyrics held extra drama for me
because I'd never been to those places.
Distant places hold a magic.

Our family took Sunday drives through the countryside.
We loved it, and I even envied the folks who lived there,
even though I knew it wasn't for me.
I can only take so much peace and quiet.

But I DO have a country home.
It's in my songs.

A PLACE IN MY MIND.

Home - a place in my mind with summertime snow…
Home - a place in my mind where wintertime flowers grow…
I can go home in the springtime and see the leaves turn gold,
Or just drop in and say hello to my folks,
In a place where they'll never grow old

Home - a feeling of love that the family gives…
Home - a place in my mind where Grandpa and Grandma still live…
Dad's gonna shake my hand,
I'll get a kiss from Mom, I know.
Home - a place in my mind where I sometimes go.

Home - a place in my mind where dandelions blow…
Home - a tree I can climb and look at the world below…
I can sit out on the front porch in that squeaky swing,
Or just drop in to my yesterday house,
Where little sisters often sing.

Home - a place in my mind with a kitchen that's warm…
Home - by the fireside glow, I'm lookin' out at the storm…
And when this lonesome traveler's feeling kinda low,
Home - is a place in my mind where I sometimes go.
