This nebula image shows us how our own sun will die |
Fast-forward five billion years or so, and our own sun will look something like this: the Messier 27 (M27) planetary nebula, also known as the Dumbbell Nebula. It’s a vast cloud of gas and dust, ejected by a dying sun, and lit up by the star’s last embers. |
This spectacular image of M27 was captured by astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy, over the course of 30 hours and several nights, in order to avoid both the sun and the Earth getting in the way of the shot. |

For most of its history, buying life insurance meant home visits, blood draws, and weeks of waiting. Algorithms changed that. Ethos uses data-driven underwriting to assess risk from a short online questionnaire, so most applicants skip the medical exam entirely and get a decision the same day. What used to take weeks now takes as little as 10 minutes. And at the end of it, the people you love are protected. Policies start around $54 a month*, and over 500,000 families are already covered (available in every state except NY). |
*Disclaimer: Sample rate: 10-year term $1M life policy for 40 y/o healthy, non-smoking male. |

How did researchers create the all-white “ghost heart,” an organ made only of collagen and other parts of the extracellular matrix? |
A) The heart got pumped with soap like Dawn, washing away lipids B) The heart was 3D printed using filament made of living structural proteins C) A detailed heart mold was filled with a protein slurry and dehydrated over 72 hours |

The Big Bang is the cornerstone of modern cosmology, most notable for the fact that it is an incomplete account. It raises as many questions as it answers, the most obvious one being: How did the big bang itself come about in the first place as the dense, thermalized, rapidly expanding, yet almost uniform fireball? |
