An undercover officer had just purchased narcotics from a suspect. As officers moved in to make the arrest, the suspect jumped on a motorized scooter and fled.
Duran had only moments to react.
He didn't reach for his firearm.
He didn't use deadly force.
Instead, he grabbed a nearby cooler and threw it into the suspect's path to stop him.
The suspect crashed and later died from his injuries.
Now, Sgt. Duran has been convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to prison.
And he is fighting to clear his name through the appeals process.
This appeal is his only chance to avoid spending the next 9 years behind bars with the very criminals he spent his career putting away.
Will you help Sgt. Duran fight for his freedom?
The Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund (LELDF) is standing with Sgt. Duran and helping fund his appeal.
But legal battles like this are long, difficult, and incredibly expensive.
And while Erik fights for his freedom, his wife and children are left carrying the burden alongside him.
They’re not only facing the reality of their husband and father spending the next 9 years in prison.
Their own lives have been threatened because of this case.
That's why I’m asking for your help today.
Please make a tax-deductible donation of $35, $50, $100, or more to help fund Sgt. Duran's appeal and give him the resources he needs to fight for his freedom.
Erik spent 15 years protecting others.
Now he needs people like you standing behind him. Every donation makes a difference.
Thank you for standing with Sgt. Duran.
Sincerely,
