Pretty simple test.
But pay attention to what happens.
Do you pop right up? Do you have to rock forward first? Does rep four feel a whole lot different than rep one?
Believe it or not, researchers actually use a version of this test to assess physical function as we get older.
Because getting out of a chair requires more than you might think.
Your quads and glutes have to lift you. Your hips need to move well. Your core has to stabilize you. And your balance and coordination have to shift your weight from the chair onto your feet.
Now here's something else I find interesting...
Have you ever stood up after sitting for a long time and felt really stiff for the first few steps?
Then you walk around for a minute and suddenly everything starts feeling better.
There's a reason for that too.
Your joints are designed to move, and movement actually changes what's happening inside and around them. That's where the old saying “motion is lotion” comes from.
We put together a new article that gets into all of this—including what happens inside your joints, why sitting can make your hips feel so stiff, and 5 simple things you can do to keep moving well as you get older.

And yes, there are some exercises in there too.
I can't talk about hips for that long without sneaking a few in. 😄
