STORY BEHIND THE SONG
A lot of hit songs have been written for artists other than the ones who
eventually recorded the song or scored a hit on it.
And as the story goes - Ronnie Milsap's 1982 number one - "He Got You" – was one
of those tunes.
The song was written by Ralph Murphy and keyboard player Bobby Wood. The pair
wrote the song for Bobby Whitlock - who had just moved to Nashville, Tennessee
after touring with The Rolling Stones and played with Eric Clapton.
The song was part of a demo package that was used to attempt to secure a
recording contract for Whitlock - which didn't happen. And during that time
record producer Tom Collins had asked them for some songs for Ronnie Milsap.
After hearing the song - Collins played the song for Milsap. He liked it -
recorded it and the rest is country music history!
Ronnie Milsap's RCA Victor single "He Got You" came on the country music charts
August 7th, 1982 and made it to the top slot on October 23rd.
It was his 35th charted song and his 21st number one. The single was on the
charts for 18 weeks.

TROUBLE BEHIND THE CURTAINS
By: Jack Blanchard
Maybe I've told you about Gordon Leeder before,
but he came into my thoughts today for no apparent reason,
and so I tell it again.
Gordon cracked me up!
He reminded me of Tim Conway in looks and personality.
He was always witty,
and looking back, he seemed abnormally happy.
I sort of envied Gordon.
He and his wife owned The Star Dry Cleaners
on Oliver Street, in North Tonawanda, New York.
I could see his store from my cheap apartment
above the bowling alley across the street.
I didn't even own a car in those days,
much less my own business.
We played poker about once a week
and went to some club meetings together.
Gordon cheered everybody up.
One night Gordon Leeder committed suicide with a shotgun.
Nobody seemed to know why.
I was a pallbearer at his funeral,
and although that was many years ago,
Gordon still pops into my mind once in a while.
Here's one of the things I've learned in my life:
No matter how good things look from the outside,
there's usually trouble going on behind the curtains.
Now I pay more attention to each person who comes into my life.

VIEW FROM THE FRONT PORCH
By: Stan Hitchcock
Denise and I will have been married 30 years this coming September. To celebrate
this life changing event, we are planning a trip to Scotland and to spend our
Honeymoon Night in a Castle that has ties to my McAlister Family heritage. Our
ten day trip will be an exciting adventure to expolore this beautiful Scottish
land.
Yesterday, I received an Invitation to speak, as a visiting artist in residence,
at
Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh. In a story-telling session, much like
the one I did earlier this year at Princeton University, I will speak on Music
and Television in my Hillbilly fashion, and maybe throw in a song or two. What
an honor to be invited and to speak about my life in Music.
The Scots-Irish Immigrants that came to help settle this Country called America,
in the 16-1700's, were drawn to the Appalachian and Ozark Mountain regions, and
they brought with them something very special besides their Work Ethic...they
brought Music. The regions of the Mountains that they settled in was where Mr.
Peer came with his recording device and captured this music of the common people
and introduced it to the World. From the porches of the rustic homes, deep in
the Mountains and Valleys, to the upstairs room in a storefront in Bristol,
Tennessee, the music that we know as "Country" was born. So, it is exciting for
me to go back to the land of the source, where my people boarded a Sailing Ship
and came to a New Home, and passed on down to me and my offspring, the love of
music. Perhaps that is where I got such an interest in playing Cowboys and
Indians when I was a lad, because my Ancestors were heavily involved in the
"real thing". Across North Carolina, into Tennessee and Kentucky, up to Indiana
and Illinois and finally into Missouri and Arkansas, they paid a heavy price to
settle the Wilderness.
Denise has worked long and hard to arrange this trip for us and to her goes all
the credit, for as you know, I am a Porch Sitter and Fish Pursuer, content to
watch the World go by at a slower pace, and only on occasion coming out of my
refuge, with a story or two shared with those that might want to listen. But, as
they say in the Mountains, "Ever so often, even a blind hog finds an acorn", so
probably there is hope for me too.
