Those tiny dots and squiggles aren't actually floating in front of your eyes.
Look at a bright blue sky.
Or a white wall.
Or, apparently, the computer screen while you're supposed to be working.
And there it is.
A tiny squiggle.
You try to look directly at it...
and it moves.
So you move your eyes again.
It moves again.
Now you're chasing something around inside your own field of vision like a cat with a laser pointer.
Welcome to the strange world of eye floaters.
And here's the first surprise:
They're not floating in front of your eye.
They're inside it.
Most of the inside of your eyeball is filled with a clear, gel-like substance called the vitreous.
When we're younger, that gel tends to be more uniform.
As we age, its structure naturally changes. Tiny fibers within the vitreous can clump together or become more noticeable.
Those little clumps can cast shadows onto the light-sensitive tissue at the back of your eye—your retina.
And what do you see?
Dots. Threads. Cobwebs. Squiggles. Little transparent blobs.
Floaters.
Which means you're not really looking at the floater.
You're seeing the shadow it casts inside your own eye.
There's a reason they seem to dart away whenever you try to look directly at them.
The vitreous moves as your eyes move. So when your eyeball shifts, those little fibers and clumps shift too.
Floaters are also easier to notice against something bright and plain—a blue sky, white paper, a light-colored wall, or a bright screen.
Many floaters are simply part of normal changes inside the eye as we get older.
There is, however, one important exception worth knowing.
A sudden shower of new floaters—especially with flashes of light, a dark curtain or shadow in your vision, or sudden vision loss—needs prompt medical attention.
Those symptoms can sometimes happen when the retina is torn or detached.
But that familiar little squiggle you've occasionally watched drift across a bright sky?
Now you know what you're seeing. Or technically...what you're seeing the shadow of. Your eyeballs are weird. And absolutely fascinating.
