Panama delivers on all of it. After all, Panama is the closest top retirement haven to the U.S., according to our Retirement Index 2026. Planning your retirement? More than 40,000 North American retirees already call Panama home—you'll be in good company, with a built-in community waiting for you. (Not yet ready for retirement? Keep reading. Panama has plenty to offer you, too.) Most of these retirees, of course, are lured by sunshine and beaches—little S-shaped Panama has more than 1,800 miles of mainland coastline, but much, much more if you add in its 1,400+ islands. In Panama you are never far from a gorgeous beach. Want to buy an ocean-view or even an ocean-front home? Those can be had starting at about $80,000. Rentals are bargain-priced, too...even in the heart of the fabulously sophisticated capital city, you can find 2-bedroom/2-bath furnished apartments in great areas starting at about $1,000. By the way, Panama is below the hurricane zone. You will never have to worry about evacuating your home...ever...nor will you need expensive homeowners insurance. Property taxes, too, are almost a non-issue...about $306 a year on a $155,000 condo, for example. Another big benefit, as I mentioned, is that Panama is super close to the US and Canada and in the same time zone, making it easy to keep in touch with family and friends, who will all want to come visit, of course. Then there's the low cost of living. A couple can easily get by on $1,800 to $3,000, depending on if you buy, rent, own a vehicle, etc. I know this all sounds too good to be true, but it's not. It's all laid out for you here. In fact, probably the biggest reason Panama ranks so high on the 2026 Index (and tops the "Retiree Benefits" category) is because... |
The most comprehensive and attractive package of retiree benefits in the world—only available in Panama—will positively impact your bottom line and your quality of life. Over and over, retirees in Panama will tell you about the huge benefits and discounts they get on everything from cultural and sporting events to travel and restaurant meals, medical and legal services, and much more. You'll get discounts on all your medical prescriptions....even over-the-counter medications. You'll get discounts on hotel rooms and airfares, on your utility and phone bills, public transportation, and much more—including tax-free importation of household goods up to $10,000...a huge benefit. What about medical care? Panama is rapidly becoming a medical tourism destination for both quality of care and pricing. In the capital city, especially, you'll find some of Latin America's best hospitals. And remember, Panama is a small country. Just about anywhere you choose to live, you won't be far from one of its many commerce and healthcare centers. I could go on and on about the many benefits of retiring in Panama. If I've piqued your interest at all, you owe it to yourself to keep reading, here. |
Not Ready to "Officially" Retire Yet? Panama Has Something to Offer You, Too | If you're a digital nomad and still working...or looking for business and investment opportunities, Panama ticks the boxes here, too. Several visa options are designed just for you, including an extended-stay Remote Workers visa and a Foreign Professionals visa that allows you to work in Panama with your university degree. Of course, there are lots of opportunities for entrepreneurs...and starting a business is far easier and more affordable than you might expect. If it sounds like Panama is the new "Land of Opportunity," that's true. Click here to learn exactly how to live, retire, or invest in Panama. Sincerely, |

P.S. My colleague Dan Prescher, who has traveled to Panama for nearly every one of the past 25 years and lived there himself, agrees that this country is the best place in the world to retire. He has a very personal reason for that belief...you can read his story here. |
