At a recent event in London, participant Will made a presentation about his best friend Zach (and vice versa), bragging about his sportiness, emotional intelligence, and bar trivia prowess. For those who want to meet someone the good old-fashioned way but aren't too keen on approaching a cute stranger themselves, Date My Mate offers a quirky alternative. And seeing that the London event's organizers said all 150 tickets sold out in less than five minutes, it's a much-desired one, too. "People are sick of swiping. They want to be in person and meet face-to-face," said organizer Emily Churchill. "Also, I've noticed that friends really want to vouch for their single friends." Who said playgrounds are just for kids? A growing number of senior-friendly public fitness spaces are popping up across the country to help older adults get moving, improve their agility, and maybe even make a friend or two while they're at it. One of those spaces is the Great Age Fitness Park, a "senior playground" in Houston. Instead of baby swings, slides, and seesaws, the vibrant space is filled with low-impact exercise equipment, including elliptical bikes, balance beams, and tai chi wheels. The park also hosts guided classes in its garden. "Movement is the key to living a full life. The moment you start to slow down, everything changes," Great Age founder Fritz McDonald told Today. And in the process of staying active, visitors also get a chance to socialize, which comes with its own heap of health benefits and — perhaps equally as important — makes life feel a little more joyful.

A Pet‑Friendly Homeless Shelter Pilot Reduced Homelessness Among the People It Helped

This article was written by Benjamin F. Henwood, a professor of social policy and health at the University of Southern California, for The Conversation. When homeless shelters allow people to stay with their dogs and other pets, more unhoused people become morewilling to stay in a shelter. That's what my team at the University of Southern California's Homelessness Policy Research Institute learned when we evaluated California's Pet Assistance and Support Program. California's Department of Housing and Community Development established this pilot program in 2019. Its goals were straightforward: to make homeless shelters more accommodating to people with pets — mostly dogs — so that people living on the streets don't have to choose between staying in shelters or abandoning their pets. The program disbursed $15.75 million between 2020 and 2024to 37 organizations across the state. The funding allowed shelters to build kennels or other pet-friendly spaces, provide pet food and supplies, and offer basic veterinary care. It also covered the costs of staffing and maintaining insurance required to operate pet-friendly shelters. Learn more about its success.
