Lots of ways to get a second passport, lots of good places to get one. Here's how to find the one that's best for you... | |
|
Feb. 19, 2026 Dear International Living Postcards Reader, "Having dual citizenship is an honor and a privilege. Being a citizen of Italy means being a citizen of the EU, which gives you the right to live or work within the EU without needing a visa! "You can study and travel freely within the 27 member states (countries).... As a citizen of Italy, you are able to use the highly regarded and nearly no-cost national healthcare system." That's Cindy, a former Coloradan who got her Italian citizenship through ties to an ancestor born there. |

Italy is just one of more than 50 countries where you can get a second passport through descent. Don't have those ancestral ties? Don't worry. There are other ways to get a second passport...some easier and less costly others. (Time is of the essence, though, for some programs. See more here.) For instance, you can get a passport through investment...buy a vacation home in the Caribbean and you can be eligible for citizenship. |
| You have the right to a second passport. Are you one of 128 million Americans eligible today, through DNA, in one of 50+ countries? Beyond ancestral ties, there are manyother ways to get one. Find the path that works best for you. |

Or...get a passport by naturalization...simply living in a place for a period of time...as little as two or three years in some cases. My friend Warren and his wife, who live in San Miguel de Allende, became Mexican citizens. He says: "We're still proud American citizens. When you live abroad for so many years, one has to engage and be a part of life. It was just a natural part of the immigration process that, at that point, we became citizens." As Warren points out, dual citizenship is perfectly legal, as confirmed by the US Supreme Court. There are many other benefits, too. A big one, says Cindy—who I mentioned earlier—is the higher standards and lower costs of living you can have in another country. "I couldn't afford my lifestyle if I moved back to the US. I receive $1,500 a month in Social Security. It's not enough to cover rent in Denver, but abroad, it easily covers my housing and much more." She pays $800 a month for her furnished apartment in Palermo on the Italian island of Sicily, with three sets of French doors that open onto three balconies. Daily expenses are affordable, too, she says. "I love that I can go to the grocery store and not break the bank. You can buy tomatoes, eggplants, zucchini, sun-dried tomatoes, and everything else for a song." As for healthcare, she says: "Now that I'm an Italian citizen, I'm fully covered, which means there's no charge for general care." |
The Fastest, Easiest, Lowest-Cost Way to the Second Passport That's Right for You... |
It's not imperative, of course, to have a second passport to live overseas. But as Cindy and Warren have discovered, the advantages make sense. To pinpoint your best options, you can hire an expensive global relocation company—they typically charge thousands of dollars for this. |
|
|
But there's a better way... It's all laid out for you in the 14th edition of THE PASSPORT BOOK, written by my colleague Ted Baumann. This 601-page guide will help you compare, contrast, and unlock the benefits of the world's best citizenship programs...far more than you'll get from forums or on Youtube....or by hiring expensive advisors. In it you'll discover... |
