STORY BEHIND THE SONG

A lot of hit songs have quite a history behind them and "Tennessee Whiskey" is
one of those songs.

"Tennessee Whiskey" was written by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove and was first
recorded by David Allen Coe for his 1981 album of the same name. His version of
the
song peaked on the country charts at Number 77.

Country music fans have also heard the song "Tennessee Whiskey" sung by David
Allan Coe, George Jones and, most recently, Chris Stapleton — but they missed
out
on hearing George Strait sing it. During an interview, Strait confessed that he
passed on the song when it was offered to him. He admitted: "Dean Dillon played
the song
for me and I just missed it."

George Jones' Epic Records version of "Tennessee Whiskey" came on the country
charts September 10th, 1983 and peaked at number two.

It was his 100th charted song and was on the charts for 22 weeks.

WRITING SONGS UNDER PRESSURE.
By: Jack Blanchard

It's harder to write songs under pressure,
but you're more likely to get it done.

When Misty and I were flying high on the charts with major labels,
and having to plan a recording session every couple of months,
the pressure was on us to come up with four or five songs
that were not only damn good,
but, more importantly, were different.
Different enough to grab the public attention.

If we didn't,
we would be at the mercy of the corporate guys
who would descend upon us with songs
written by themselves or their uncle
and lots of ideas for improving our "product".

I've long resented the term "product"
as applied to the music we work so hard at.

Misty and I always recorded four or five songs
in a three-hour session,
and kept the suits at bay by writing 99% of them.
We occasionally picked an outside song,
before they got a chance to do it for us.

Having to come up with so many special songs so often
was a constant pressure,
because being a major label artist with hits
isn't a condition that's easy to maintain.
Hit a slump and you're back working at Burger King.

There is little or no security for musicians at the top,
This can bring on writer's block.
It may be a form of a musical death wish,
when the stress level gets way up the scale,
and you almost don't care anymore.

When the deadlines approached, I would start writing fast.
Sometimes in the bus on the way to Nashville,
or in the motel room before a session.
There is a power that takes over when it's sink or swim.
I felt as though my feet were up in stirrups,
and somebody was telling me to breathe and push.

Somehow my song babies turned out okay,
and still call me once in a while.

View From A Long Life-Stan Hitchcock

81 years ago, at Midnight tonight, my Mama birthed me, my Daddy named me after
his ownself, and I cried for a moment cause I wanted to be called Hank or Luther
or Lefty,
but when the Doctor slapped me on the butt, then I shut up and decided it might
be best to kinda lay low until I figured this Life business out. Well, I been
laying low all
this time and I still haven't got it figured out. Reckon I might as well sit up
and pay attention, and use all this knowledge that I got saved up, and make
something of
myself. Y'know, like a Brain Surgeon, or an Astronaut, or maybe President of
these United States ..... whoa!

And that is when I woke up and slapped myself silly! Why, that has got to be the
absolute worst job in the World...you got millions of people growling and
barking at you and calling you names and making up stupid accusations about you
that sound like they come out of a comic book or something.

No, I reckon I'll kinda stick to my fishing and Classic Country stuff. I may not
amount to much but by golly I'm still upright and don't have to answer to nobody
but the Lord.

The Lord has brought me through all these years and He will not leave me now.

So, Happy Birthday Hitch, it ain't over til you sing your last song. stan

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

Then the Lord said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If
you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is
right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule
over it."

– Genesis 4:6-7 (NIV)
