STORY BEHIND THE SONG

Several recording artists have recorded songs despite protests from their record
producer or record label and according to Loretta Lynn - her 1969 hit song,
"Wings Upon Your Horns" was one of those tunes!

she commented, "We were in the studio recording that song and when I got to the
chorus: "You're the first to ever make me fall in love and not take me," my
producer Owen Bradley came out of the control room and told me that I'd never
get away with that because the song was too dirty. I asked him what was dirty
about it and he told me "Horns" and I didn't understand that. He didn't like it
a little bit but I recorded it the way I wrote it and it was a hit."

Loretta's Decca Records single "Wings Upon Your Horns" came on the country music
charts November 29th, 1969 and peaked at number eleven.

It was her 24th charted song and was on the charts for sixteen weeks.

THE DYSFUNCTIONAL BAND.
By: Jack Blanchard

An example of "Synergy"
is when a group of musicians are better together
than they are separately.
Killer Turtle was not one of those bands.
In fact they had Reverse Synergy.
They were all good musicians, but together they stank.

Chuck was a great lead guitarist, but he had one weird fault,
he always thought he was out of tune.
He spent half the time with his back to the audience
and his ear to the strings, trying to tune up.
Nobody else thought his guitar needed tuning.
They just thought he was nuts.

Matt had fine technique as a drummer, except for one problem,
during every fill, between phrases,
he would drag the tempo down a little.
You could hardly notice it at first,
but fast songs would end up slow,
and ballads almost came to a stop.
He tried to commit suicide by throwing himself behind a train.

Herbie was one of the best, as a bass player,
but after playing with the dragging drummer,
he began rushing the beat to compensate.
The other guys tried to find a middle ground to play in
somewhere between the bass and drums.

Wayne was a genius steel guitar player with a drinking problem.
The more he drank, the more vibrato came into his playing,
until it was hard to tell what key he was in.
Late in the evenings you had to take Dramamine to listen to him..

Jack, the piano man, was over-educated,
and knew too many nice chords for his own good.
He threw them into his music
in the hopes that the other guys would eventually learn them,
but they just thought he was playing wrong,
and dreamed of finding a new keyboard player.

Don was a talented lead singer,
but he constantly fiddled with the sound system dials,
causing loud squealing feedback,
and making the audience cross their eyes, cover their ears,
and do a pain dance.

One night two simultaneous miracles happened.
1. A major label talent scout came into the club,
and; 2. The band played one whole song perfectly.
It happened to be the last song of the evening,
and the agent signed them to a big bucks recording contract.

If there were any justice, Killer Turtle would have been a big flop,
but in the modern recording studio
the engineers could correct all of their faults.
Their electronically perfect recordings sounded wonderful,
and they were hits.
On personal appearances they pretended to play and sing,
but actually worked with karaoke tracks.

The moral:
You don't have to be good
if you can make people think you're good.

View From The Front Porch-Stan Hitchcock

Well, I'll tell you what, I'm doing one of my very favorite pastimes...I'm
sitting on the Front Porch watching a Summer Thunderstorm water my fresh cut
grass. By doggies I can take a lot of this kind of work...cool breeze cooling my
sweaty brow from being on the John Deere and cutting said grass...a tall drink
of good Tennessee limestone water with a little piece of lemon in it just to
perk it up...my John Deere baseball cap stopping the sweat from funning from my
head straight to my eyeballs, like it always tries to do. It just don't get no
better than this for a Simple Man, I don't know about them rich folks...maybe
for them there is something better....but, I'll stick with what I have and be
happy.
I always try to be Thankful for even the little blessings of Life, and to Thank
the Lord that created all. Thank you Lord for the gentle rain in the Hot Summer
that refreshes the Earth, and Lord, we Pray for those folks further South in
Louisiana that are getting torrential rain and it's hurtful to them and we pray
for relief and strength for them to get through it all. Be with all those that
are sick and in need today, we pray for Healing and Blessings on them. Thank You
Lord that you always give us Access to You, and that the weakest of us, such as
I, You listen when we call with our needs and our Thanks.
God Bless Us All.

Stan
