STORY BEHIND THE SONG

A lot of hit songs come from friends and according to Sonny James – that was the
case with his 1972 number one "When The Snow Is On The Roses."

Sonny commented, "I had a good friend who lived in North Alabama named Edgar
Clayton and Edgar knew that a lot of material crossed each artist desk all the
time. The songs are either sent in or handed to them by publishers or writers
and Edgar always kept an ear out for songs for me. He knew good songs and things
that he liked and this is a song that he just loved and so he sent me a tape of
"When The Snow Is On The Roses" and I never will forget calling him back. I said
I love that song. I can't wait to get into the studio and he said well I'm so
glad cause he said that is just a favorite of mine and he said I just knew that
you'd like it. So I went in, I don't think it was even a week later. I mean I
really wanted to get into the studio to record that song."

Sonny James single "When The Snow Is On The Roses" was released on May 7, 1972
and was in the number one slot on September 16th.

The song was written by Larry Kusick, Eddie Snyder, Ernest Bader and Hans Last.

The single was produced by George Richey and was on the charts for 15 weeks.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Q: Is there something new on the market from The Highwaymen? My daughter says
she heard about it on the radio.
A: "The Highwaymen Live: American Outlaws," a deluxe DVD / CD box set featuring
the legendary work of Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Kris
Kristofferson, wil be on the market on May 20th. The project include two discs
of a performance at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y., recorded in 1990, along
with a never-before-released concert film of the show. The set also includes a
disc of tracks recorded at Farm Aid festivals throughout the years and debuts a
cover of Bob Dylan's "Too Many Mornings," recorded by Nelson and Kristofferson
in 2014.

Q: According to my son, Alabama is now recording with Alison Kraus. Is that
true?
A: "Come Find Me," an Alabama recording with Alison Krauss, is the newest
single from their "Southern Drawl" album. Alison plays fiddle on the recording
and sings harmony on the bridge with Teddy Gentry and Randy Owen.

Q: The radio guys were taking about a movie about Merle Haggard. Do you have
any details?
A: GMH Productions has reportedly acquired the rights for a project to be
titled "Done It All," written by Cliff Hollingsworth (Cinderella Man) and
developed in conjunction with Haggard's friend Carl Cooper. Cooper and
Haggard's son Ben began recording videos of Haggard telling his life story in
the mid-2000s, to use to develop a movie script.

injury center. Do you have any info on that?
A: Through his Journey Home Project, Charlie Daniels has donated $50,000 to an

Mass., to Atlanta, Ga., to raise funds for the SHARE Military Initiative, a
rehabilitative care project for soldiers returning from war with traumatic brain

WRITING THE SONGS.
By: Jack Blanchard

I'm telling you this because people are often interested in how writers work.
I know I am.

Most of my writing seems to me to be accidental.
I have never planned or plotted a story or song in my life.
I don't know how.

I usually let my mind wander into a situation, real or imaginary,
and the pictures unfold in front of me.
I just take down what happens, as it happens.
I don't know what the ending will be until it ends.
I'm as surprised as everybody else.

I seldom know the title of a song until the rest of it is done.
I often have a temporary working title but it's usually replaced
and demoted to a line somewhere in the piece.

Any craftsmanship I may have comes later,
when I go in and heartlessly edit the whole thing,
trying to get rid of all phrases that don't add to the story,
and replacing all words that are almost right with ones that are closer to
right.

I don't like fill-in lines. I'd rather have it short. Or, maybe a better word is
"tight".

In school sports I was a good sprinter
but not good in any race over 100 yards.
I did okay in football, baseball, and hockey because the action is in spurts.
My writing limitations are the same...short all-you've-got bursts.

I like composing song lyrics.
because they're miniatures, like little pieces of jewelry.

Working out the music part is fun
because the secret of music is surprises.
The music can come first, last, or along with the words.
No formula works for me every time.

I would write even if I never got paid...which is somewhat how it's turned out.
Some guys play golf.

VIEW FROM THE FRONT PORCH
By: Stan Hitchcock

Throughout my 56 year professional music career, many times I would be asked, by
a young person of musical aspirations, just how do you get to be successful in a
music career. Well, I have thought about it a lot, and here is what I believe.
There is a special hunger for music that a few people seem to be born with. It
is a desire (hunger)that just will not let them quit or give up until they make
it. For example...
Jimmy Rodgers was dying of TB on his last recording session in New York...he had
a mattress brought into the studio...he would sing a song...then go lay down and
rest to get the strength to do another one. He died in a Hotel Room a couple of
days after the session.

Hank Williams died in the back of his Cadillac Convertible on the way to do his
last show...in so much pain he couldn't stand to set up...he died from overdose
of pain medication.

Bob Wills did his last session in a wheel chair, so weak he couldn't
stand...dying a short time later.

I have seen Ernest Tubb go on stage when he was so sick he could hardly
stand...but, he sat on the edge of the stage after the show until every fan had
been met and thanked.

The doctors tried to get Merle Haggard to cancel all shows and stay in the
Hospital the last few months of his life. He kept leaving the Hospital and going
to do shows...so weak it was hard to make it on stage...he wrote his last songs
from his hospital bed...the creativity just would not stop as long as he had a
breath.
My point is this: If you want to be another entertainer like these
legends...then you got to have that special spirit that just won't quit.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of
mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one
voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
