STORY BEHIND THE SONG

A telephone conversation or something heard during a phone conversation have
supplied the idea or the "hook line" for several hit songs.

And B. J. Thomas' 1983 number one, "New Looks From An Old Lover" was one of
those tunes!

According to B.J. – he walked into the kitchen one morning as his wife was on
the phone and she remarked to a friend on the other end of the line that she
"was getting

new looks from an old lover."

He encouraged her to write the song which she later wrote with Red Lane and
Lathan Hudson for B.J.'s first Columbia album titled "New Looks."

"Whatever Happened To Old Fashioned Love" was the first single released from
that album and "New Looks From An Old Lover" was the second single and came on
the

country charts July 9th, 1983. It was at the top of the charts October 1st,
1983.

TODAY IN COUNTRY MUSIC HISTORY

1928
Born on this day in Corsicana, Texas, was Lefty Frizzell (born William Orville
Frizzell). The American country music singer and songwriter of the 1950s, became
an
influence on later stars including Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, George Jones,
John Fogerty and Roy Orbison, (who as a part of the Traveling Wilburys chose the
name
"Lefty Wilbury" to honor his musical hero). Frizzell died on July 19, 1975.

1933
Born on this day in Maces Spring, Virginia, was singer Anita Carter, who played
upright bass with her sisters Helen Carter and June Carter Cash as The Carter
Sisters.
The trio joined the Grand Ole Opry radio show in 1950 and opened shows for Elvis
Presley, and joined The Johnny Cash Show in 1971. She scored two Top Ten hits in

1951 with "Down The Trail of Achin' Hearts" with Hank Snow and "Blue Bird
Island" and she reached the Top Ten again in 1968 with "I Got You" with Waylon
Jennings.
She died on July 29th 1999 aged 66.

1934
Born on this day in Durham, North Carolina, was songwriter John D. Loudermilk.
His hits include "Indian Reservation," by Paul Revere & The Raiders; "Abilene,"
by
George Hamilton IV; and "Tobacco Road" (a hit for The Nashville Teens in 1964).

1949
The first 45-rpm disc, "Texarkana Baby" by country & western singer Eddy Arnold,
was issued by RCA in the US. It was made of green vinyl, as part of an early
attempt to
color-code singles according to the genre of music they featured. Others
included red for classical music and yellow for children's songs.

1971
The final Johnny Cash television music variety show hosted by Johnny Cash was
aired. The Screen Gems 58-episode series ran from June 7, 1969 to March 31, 1971
on
ABC; it was taped at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. The show
featured many folk-country musicians, such as Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Linda
Ronstadt,
Kris Kristofferson, Mickey Newbury, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Merle Haggard,
James Taylor and Tammy Wynette.

1977
Glen Campbell was at #1 on the US country charts with "Southern Nights". Written
by Allen Toussaint it was the first single released from Campbell's 1977 album,
Southern Nights. The lyrics of "Southern Nights" were inspired by childhood
memories Toussaint had of visiting relatives in the Louisiana backwoods which
often
entailed storytelling under star-filled nighttime skies.

IT'S THE CONTRASTS.
By: Jack Blanchard

I was rereading a very complimentary review of one of our records.
The reviewer said this:
"It's one of the best songs Jack has written
in his long career as a songwriter."

I read the write-up about a dozen times
due apparently to a self-esteem problem.
Then I started to think "What's wrong?
I should be happier than this."

Digging through my cluttered ego,
I think I found the problem.
It was the phrase "his long career".

That's it? That was the career?
Somehow I've always thought of myself as an up-and-comer,
expecting to break into a career at any moment.
I didn't know I was actually having one... a long one.

I guess any musician who gets through life
without resorting to too many day jobs - can call it a career.

How could I have had this alleged long career
when I still feel 27 years old inside?
It must be insecurity when I take a compliment as an obituary.

Peggy Lee sang a famous song titled "Is That All There Is?".
I know the song is good, but I always avoided listening to it.
When it comes on, I mentally cover my ears
and sing Jingle Bells,..fake a coughing fit,.or just leave the room.
Some songs cut too close to the truths we don't want to hear.

I write sad songs about life and death, so who am I to talk?
But if I'm in the later chapters of a long career, where's my mansion?
My big bank account?

Misty and I were never Nashville insiders,
and we never got paid for most of our efforts,
but for some reason we still love our work, and will never retire.
We're waiting for some excitement...a tour........the Big Break.

Retirement to me is like endless recess.
We have too much left to do.

We'd like to move to Cortland, New York.
It's beautiful country,
they have a Country Music Hall of Fame,
and there's an apple named after the town.
So why not?

Or maybe Tennessee or California, Australia or Buffalo.
Somewhere to see new or old things. Have an adventure.

I know Misty Morgan and I have been doing this for a lot of years,
and yet it seems like one year.
We've had unbelievable fun and some real hell along the way.
The bad times made the good times taste better.
It's the contrasts. We still want more.
We're addicted to life and music.

VIEW FROM THE FRONT PORCH
By: Stan Hitchcock

Late Night At The Old Farm House-Stan Hitchcock

10:40 PM on Easter Sunday and a pretty peppy Thunderstorm is sweeping over
Sumner County, Tennessee. Glad it waited til late evening and gave all the
Family and

Friends that came to our Easter Gathering/Late Birthday celebration a chance to
enjoy outside. It was a fine day to sit outside and in and partake of Denise's
Noon Dinner

with Special dishes brought by the attendees. We had a great Baked Ham, Fresh
Wild Caught Salmon, grilled outside on Cedar Planks on the grill with fresh
slices of

Pineapple on the grill alongside, my contribution to the meal was my Semi-World
Famous German Potato Salad, and some Mashed Potatoes for those who chose mashed

instead of Potato Salad, Fresh Corn, Grilled fresh Asparagus Spears, Broccolli
Casserole, Assorted fresh cut Relish Tray, Wisconsin Cheeses, Fresh baked rolls,
fresh

bacon/cheese corncakes...followed by a variety of Homemade desserts the girls
brought for our piggin' out pleasure.
It was a Blessed Day of Family, with Our Kids, Grandkids, spouses and wives,
dogs and cats....and our friends and partners Chuck and Nancy Lowrance...who
finally

toddled off to Guestroom Bed upstairs in the Old Farm House. Tomorrow Chuck and
I have some business to attend to with Classic Country Foods and enjoying the

pleasure of the visit. Chuck and I share the same Birth date (okay he is a few
years younger)and have been friends for over 50 years. Old friends are kinda
like a well worn

pair of favorite shoes...they just feel so dang good.
I hope your Easter Sunday was a good one, and you are now ready for the new week
to come. It is good to be alive and well and still climbing. Love from The

Hitchcocks...Stan and Denise.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can
be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how
will he

not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any
charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is
the one who

condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to
life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.
– Romans 8:31-34 (NIV)
