STORY BEHIND THE SONG

A lot of hit songs have been written in just a few minutes - while others took
weeks and months - even years - to complete.

According to Guy Clark - Ricky Skaggs' 1982 number one "Heartbroke," was one
that took awhile to write.

Clark commented "I had parts of that song in my book for several years but I
couldn't figure out where to go with them. Then one day I was working on another
song and the chorus just came into my mind but then I couldn't figure out how to
use it so I just kept it in my book for another year. Then one day as I was
going thru my book - it all came to me and I finished the song.

Clark says that he had Chuck Berry in mind when he wrote the song which was
recorded by George Strait and Rodney Crowell. Ricky Skaggs played a fiddle on
Guy Clark's version before Skaggs recorded the song.

Ricky Skaggs' Epic Records single "Heartbroke" was recorded for his second Epic
album "Highways And Heartaches," before it came on the country charts September
18th, 1982 and made the top of the list on November 13th.

It was his 6th charted song and his 3rd number one.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Q: I heard the radio guys talking about Bill Anderson finding a guitar that
was stolen years ago. Do you know anything about that?
A: Anderson's Grammer guitar which he played fifty years ago and had loaned to
a museum but was stolen shortly thereafter - was finally returned to him after
it surfaced in a Phoenix, Arizona pawn shop. Shop owner Mile Grauer contacted
Anderson after he noticed Bill's name on the guitar and called him. Grauer
recently presented the guitar to Anderson during a Grand Ole Opry performance.

Q: The TV news had a thing about Dolly Parton and a Smith School Of Music. Do
you have any information?
A: Proceeds from Dolly's recent Ryman Auditorium concerts benefited The W. O.
Smith School Of Music's Dustin Wells Foundation. The School offers affordable
music lessons to underprivileged children.

Q: Lynn Anderson was one of my favorite singers. How many number ones did she
have?
A: Lynn placed 60 songs on the country music charts from 1966 thru 1989 -
including five number ones.

Q: I remember a song on the radio years ago about "Forgive Me Dear." Do you
know who ad that record and when?
A: "Forgive Me Dear" was the flip-side of Faron Young's 1955 number one, "Live
Fast Love Hard, Die Young."

Q: I know the song "I Wonder Where You Are Tonight" was recorded by several
singers. Johnny Rodriguez sang the song during a concert in Oklahoma several
years ago. Did he ever record that song?
A: Rodriguez' version of "I Wonder Where You Are Tonight" is in his 1973
"Introducing Johnny Rodriguez" album.

Q: Back in the 50's there was a couple of guys on the Louisiana Hayride who
sang a song about "If You Don't Somebody Else Will." Do you know their names?
A: Those two guys were Jimmy Lee Fautheree and Country Johnny Mathis - who
performed and recorded as "Jimmy and Johnny." Their version of the song peaked
at number 3 in 1954. Ray Price scored a number 8 with the song that same year.
Carl Smith took it to number 97 in 1976.

THE BITTERSWEET SONG.
By: Jack Blanchard

I like to write songs that cheer people up, or entertain in some way..
I also like to write songs that make us think and are not always cheery.
I especially like bitter-sweet songs like "He Stopped Loving Her Today",
and "Yesterday When I was Young".
I seem to write a lot of those.
I guess they express something that I need to get out of my system.

SHADOWS OF THE LEAVES.

(He sings):
Life was never easy, but when troubles came along,
Together we could take 'em in our stride.
Through the good times and the tears,
through all the passing years,
night and day, you never left my side.
Now the shadows of the leaves on the grass beneath the trees
are the only things that move across the lawn,
as I stand here all alone
and read the words upon the stone,
I begin to realize you're really gone.

(She sings):
Don't think it's just your troubled mind if suddenly you find
that something brushed away the bitter tears you've cried.
If you feel something touch your face
and disappear without a trace,
And leave a warm familiar feeling by your side.
It's not the shadows of the leaves in the early autumn breeze,
As they blow along the grass that summer dried.
Through the good times and the tears,
through the autumn of your years,
Night and day, I'll never leave your side.

(Together):
Oh, the shadows of the leaves in the early autumn breeze
As they blow along the grass that summer dried;
Through the good times and the tears,
through all the passing years,
Night and day, I'll never leave your side.

VIEW FROM THE FRONT PORCH
By: Stan Hitchcock
Open Letter to All Politicians regardless of color, stripe, culture,
affiliation, money donors, stuffed shirt self importance or any other
description that your imagination might come up with:

I generally stay as far away from Politicians and Politics as humanly possible
where the corruption won't rub off on me. I am fed up with y'all explaining the
huge debt that the Country is suffering from is because of the dang Senior
Citizens that keep expecting you Pols to give them their "Entitlement" of Social
Security each Month. Yeah them old folks are the ones to blame alright.

Let me tell you something you puke faced thieves...you ain't giving them folks
nothing but their own money back that you took from their paychecks their whole
working life...promising that you would put it in a big jar and screw the lid
down tight and never touch it til they needed it back. But, you money grubbing
back stabbers didn't do that did you? Oh no, you kept looking at that bunch of
money just laying there and so you stole it and used it for your own pitiful
reasons...and left a bunch of IOU'S behind, as if that was just as good. Now you
see that the pot has run dry...you can't pay the IOU's and so you whine and cry
that the old folks "entitlement" is ruining the Country. Back when my Grandma
Hitchcock was a widow, in her 90's, still living by herself and feeling
confident that the Guv'ment was gonna send back some of her and Grandpa's money
that they had faithfully paid in...in the form of what she called 'her old age
pension" and the Guv'ment Cheese Commodities that they sent her...she made do
and lived to 98 with her Dignity and Independence intact...she never felt like
she was getting something for nothing from the Guv'ment...she was just getting
back some of what they had put in the pot. Her and Grandpa worked like work
horses all their lives, never asking nobody for nothing. So, you Washington
Political Cartels who couldn't keep your hands off that Sacred Trust Money...you
spent it and it's gone...you are the Thieves in this story, not us. We need to
tar and feather you all and put you astride a sharp rail and run you out of town
like in the olden days. You have just about reached the good folks limit of
patience with you all, and believe me, we might be an aging population but we
ain't dead yet and we got a lot of gumption when we are insulted and talked down
to. I don't give a rip for Democrats or Republicans, you have both stabbed the
populace in the back and not delivered what you promised. In fact, it's got so
bad now that it even makes a Richer-than-dirt Casino guy look good against a
Socialist and a Communist on the other side. Makes a feller want to go deeper
into the Mountains and close the door behind himself. S

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the
disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them,
Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of
God belongs to such as these.

—Mark 10:13-14
