Transgender attorney Rob Hopkins was arrested after having a belligerent meltdown in a Pontotoc County, Oklahoma courtroom after a heated argument with a judge. “I can’t breath! Get a female officer NOW!!” the transgender lawyer, who is a biological female, demanded when police moved in to arrest her. Watch the intense confrontation here: During a February 5 hearing, Hopkins repeatedly interrupted Judge Laurie Jackson and refused to move on to other matters. When Jackson warned the lawyer to stop interrupting and told them to “wipe that smirk off your face,” Hopkins claimed “it’s because I’m a transgender attorney practicing all over this state.” The judge rejected the suggestion and ordered him to maintain courtroom order. The situation escalated when Jackson placed Hopkins in contempt and deputies moved to detain him. Hopkins resisted, shouting “do not hurt me” and “I can’t breathe” as officers brought him to the ground. He demanded they “get a female officer now” and called for someone to “call 911” on the deputies. The case involved a client who failed to appear in court due to a separate protective order matter. Hopkins was arrested, later released on bond, and subsequently announced he would step away from legal practice while indicating he may pursue legal action over the incident. This case reveals broader obvious questions about mental health and the transgender community. Why ask for a female officer? Don’t you identify as male? Is the fact that you identify as male inconvenient for you in this moment? It’s clear from the footage that the judge and officers gave Hopkins every chance to deescalate the situation and leave, and even after officers began to arrest her, they were as gentle as they could be. If you are going to demand that the world recognize you as a man when you are in fact biologically female, you can’t play a reverse card as soon as you decide your persona is no longer convenient for you.
