Washington head coach Jedd Fisch believes his third roster in Seattle might finally be the one ready to break into the College Football Playoff conversation. After navigating a roster overhaul in Year 1 and a young roster in Year 2, Fisch believes the Huskies are positioned to take their biggest jump yet in 2026.
For 48 hours in January, those hopes were hanging in the balance after starting quarterback Demond Williams announced his intention to enter the transfer portal.
With multiple programs working to get Williams into the portal, Fisch went to work. Within 48 hours, Williams announced he was staying put.
"Last year we were still young," Fisch said. "At one point, we were starting seven true freshmen. Now those guys are sophomores. We lost some big pieces – five guys went to the NFL combine – but I feel really good about where our roster is. This team is probably the most ready of the three years to take a jump."
Fisch has retooled his offensive staff for Williams' development, hiring longtime NFL assistant Matt Cavanaugh and promoting J.P. Losman to quarterbacks coach.
"So you're going into the season, Demond's 16th start in the same offense, with the same play caller," Fisch said. "That kind of continuity is rare, and it puts us in a good spot."
Beyond his own roster, Fisch is open to further College Football Playoff expansion, favoring a 24-team playoff.
"I'm a believer in a 24-team playoff," Fisch said. "If you look at the math, the NFL has 32 teams. Almost half of the league goes into the playoffs, it's 14 teams. So we've got 64 power conference teams, so almost half – 24 – is a little bit less. But I feel like that's right."
