The Slow Travel Life That Funds Itself |
|
|
Jan. 23, 2026 Dear International Living Postcards Reader, "American by Birth. Costa Rican by Residency. Maltese by Choice." That's how Kathleen Evans introduces herself these days. Once, she had a hectic media job in Chicago. Long hours. Cold winters. A treadmill life with little room to breathe. She didn't want to "sell everything and disappear." But she and her husband wanted more than just a two-week vacation each year. Today, they spend their time between a home in Tamarindo, Costa Rica, their home in the US, and a foothold in Malta—Europe's sunniest island. |

They also enjoy leisurely months-long stays in exciting destinations around the world. Their most recent trip was to Korea! Kathleen calls it slow travel. They stay in a place long enough to shop at the local market, know the barista by name, and feel part of a place—not just visitors passing through. |
"I built a life where I can enjoy the best of all three places—and still see the rest of the world, one slow, beautiful season at a time." |
And here's the extraordinary part… Their lifestyle doesn't drain their savings. It funds itself. When they're in Malta, their homes in Costa Rica and the US earn them income. When they're in Costa Rica or the US, the other keeps earning them more. They've created a self-funding lifestyle. |
"Renting out your home base means you can travel nearly for free. And it means you always have a safety net—a place to come home to if you want." |
For Kathleen and her husband, this isn't a fantasy. It's their everyday reality. And it's something you can do too—when you know how to spot the right place, at the right time. See how Kathleen did it—and how you can too. Sincerely, |
|

P.S. When you line up your life's personal Sweet Spot with a place that's entering its own Sweet Spot—the magic happens. That's when you step not just into the best years of your life… but into the best places the world has to offer. And if you recognize it in time, you'll not only have the chance to live more richly… you could walk away wealthier than when you began. Most people miss it. Kathleen didn't. And if you know how to recognize it, you don't have to either. |
