STORY BEHIND THE SONG

A lot songs have been recorded because they happened to be a favorite tune of
the artist or perhaps the record producer. According to Maxine Brown – The
Browns recorded the song "Ground Hog" at the suggestion of their record producer
Chet Atkins.
Maxine commented, "Jim Ed, Bonnie and I always sang that song to warm up prior
to our recording sessions. And one day – Chet Atkins said "Let's record that."
And so we did. I always loved our recording of the song because of Chet's
fantastic guitar playing."
The track wound up in The Browns 1961 "Old Favorite Folks Songs" album.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Q: Do you have an update on Willie Nelson?
A: Willie canceled January and February shows in Las Vegas and California due
to undisclosed health issues - but plans to complete the remaining 27 stops on
his Willie Nelson & Family Tour. According to his publicist - it was just a bad
cold that Willie needed to recover from before being able to perform again.

Q: My daughter says she heard on TV that HeeHaw is coming back. Is that true?
A: Ryman Hospitality Properties is reportedly considering reviving "Hee Haw,"
to follow the success of "Nashville," which is making a huge impact on the
Nashville's tourism and a revival of "HeeHaw" might duplicate that success and
drive demand for a broader country music industry.

Q: I always liked Radney Foster's singing. Is there anything new from him
lately?
A: Radney Foster has announced a new book-and-album duo project featuring
fictional stories penned by the singer and accompanying music. The project will
be sold as a set, with each track on the album pairing with a short story in the
book. The project, set for release in September, will give listeners a deeper
look into the songs themselves, and their characters' stories, though both
pieces of the project are meant to be able to stand on their own as well.

Q: The radio guys mentioned a memorial service for Holly Dunn. Do you know
anything about that?
A: The celebration of life event for Holly Dunn will take place at BMI
Nashville's office, located at 10 Music Sq. E, on March 30th at 6PM. The event
will be an evening of live music and will also feature a silent auction;
performers will be announced at a later date. Entry into the celebration of life
event will require a minimum $25 donation, with proceeds going to ovarian
carcinosarcoma research. Dunn died in November of 2016, following a battle with
a rare, very aggressive type of ovarian cancer; she was 59 years old.

Q: One of my cousins thinks he may have lived next door to Johnny Paycheck
when they were kids. The neighbors last name was Checkk and they had a young son
named John. This was in Delaware. Is there any way to check that out?
A: It's very doubtful that your cousin lived next door to Johnny Paycheck. He
was born Donald Eugene Lytle in Greenfield, Ohio. He later changed his name to
Donny Young, then to Johnny Paycheck.

Q: The song "Family Bible" is my favorite. My mom says that Faron Young sang
it on the radio years ago. I've been trying to find his recording but no luck.
Did he record it?
A: Faron's version of "Family Bible" is in his 1964 "Story Songs For Country
Folks" album

A MEDICAL MYSTERY.
By: Jack Blanchard

/Written after a hospital visit in 2008./

Here's a weird little episode from my recent week at the hospital.
I was told not to eat or drink anything
for twelve hours before checking in.
After checking in there was a six hour delay before my surgery,
and then more hours of no eating or drinking
during surgery and after it was over.

I woke up starving and thirsty,
but there was a sign on my room door that said "NPO".
NPO is an abbreviation of the Latin "Non per os"
or "Nothing by mouth".
This is like the Catholics calling the Bingo numbers in Latin
so the Protestants can't win.

I had a new nurse who was friendly enough,
but not the type who would sneak you stuff.
She said I would probably get food and drink soon,
but not to have anything until she found out for sure..

A few minutes later a tray of beautiful food was wheeled in.
I thought that maybe the nurse had worked it out for me,
but I also thought that it might be a mistake.
I put that out of my mind and began eating.

Just then the nurse walked in and said "Who gave you that food?"
Between gulps I said "Didn't you order it?"
She raised her voice and said, "I gave you specific orders not to eat..."
I started eating faster.

She was getting louder
when I noticed a huge cherry cobbler on the far side of the tray
and went for it.
She yelled and I ate at full speed ahead.
She threw up her hands and stormed out of the room.

Speaking of "threw up",
later that night I barfed up something that appeared to be extra-terrestrial,
and the whole hospital went into red alert.
They rushed samples of my output to the lab,
and somebody thought I was poisoned.
Someone else mentioned carbolic acid,
and others suspected internal bleeding.

I had a crowd around my bed
and staff members running in and out of the room.
Then the news came back from the laboratory:
"No sign of poison, blood or anything harmful."

I guess the lab technicians weren't looking for cherry cobbler.

Late Night At The Old Farm House-Stan Hitchcock

1969 - Charlotte, North Carolina.....

I had been on tour, doing dates in the North and South Carolina region for
several days, and was heading back to Nashville, when I came through Charlotte,
about ten o'clock at night. I decided to stop in at a Country Music night club
where I had worked some shows in the past...have a cup of coffee, holler at my
friends in the house band...and use the bathroom.

The band was playing a set, when I walked in and I waved to the steel player on
my way to the bathroom..."Hey, Stan Hitchcock, ladies and gentlemen! Hey
Stan...good to see you." the front man said into the mike in the middle of his
song. I stopped on the edge of the dance floor and waved at the folks and then
went on to the bathroom...
Okay, I am standing there at the Urinal, in the classic position of a man, lost
in thought, as I took care of business..when this big guy came stomping into the
bathroom..walked over to me and said, in a loud and threatening voice of a
drunk..."Hey, what the hell you think you are doing saying you are Stan
Hitchcock? I happen to know Stan Hitchcock...I watch him on TV!! You dang sure
ain't him! And with that he reached out and shoved me on the shoulder...a bad
move for a drunk to make to a man involved with what I was involved with at the
time. By the time I got 'er shut down I had pretty well painted his boot
toes...Oh man, I'm gonna have to fight my way out of the bathroom and I ain't
even buttoned up yet...fortunately, the man was so drunk he was not even aware
of the decoration I had just made to his old cowboy boots...he just kept getting
louder and louder, as I was straightening up my jeans and getting presentable
again..."NOT STAN HITCHCOCK...NO WAY!!!

By this time, he had fairly well convinced me that maybe I wasn't Stan
Hitchcock...shoot I don't know...hmmm...I reached in my back pocket and pulled
my billfold out...as the man was getting all ready to try to knock my block
off...I whipped open the billfold and found my drivers license...sure
enough...right there on the thing it had my picture and my name...dang right, I
knew that's who I was all along...I pushed by his clumsy attempt to knock the
block...and walked back out into the club...the club owner noticed the drunk
staggering behind me, still hollering, "He Ain't Stan Hitchcock..." as they
escorted him to the door and put him out.

As I was getting back in my car, my coffee cup refilled and ready, I had a new
sense of self...a man who knew who he was and where he was going..shoot, I had
just proved it at the Urinal Of Identification.

Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending
