STORY BEHIND THE SONG

A lot of song writers wind up as co-writer on some songs by being in the right
place at the right time. And others have missed out on co-writing by not being
in the right place at the right time. For Hank Cochran - "Hello Walls" was
one of those tunes!

Willie Nelson commented, "Hank Cochran and I were in the Pamper Music writing
room which was actually a garage that had been converted into a sound studio
and writing room for Pamper Music. I had an idea for "Hello Walls" just about
he time Hank and I sat down to write - Pamper Music secretary came in and told
Hank that he had a phone call. He left to take care of the phone call and while
he was gone, I wrote "Hello Walls." If Hank hadn't left t take that phone call -
he would have owned half the song. Since then - he and I have laughed a lot
about the phone call that cost him half of "Hello Walls." I think I may have
laughed more about it than Hank has."

Faron Young's Capitol Record single "Hello Walls" came on the country charts
March 20th, 1961 - made it to number one and stuck there for nine weeks. It was
his 36th charted song and was on the charts for 23 weeks.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Q: My daughter tells me the radio folks were talking about Dolly Parton and
some kind of Wilie Nelson award. Do you know anything about that?
A: Dolly Parton was awarded the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award at
the 2016 CMA Awards. The Award was established in 2012 and recognizes "an iconic
artist who has attained the highest degree of recognition in country music [and]
who has achieved both national and international prominence and stature through
concert performances, humanitarian efforts, philanthropy, record sales and
public representation at the highest level."

Q: Can you settle an argument? According to my wife - Hank Williams was
inducted into the Hall Of Fame in the 1960's but my daughter says that he was
inducted in the 1980's.
A: Hank Williams was one of the first inductees into The Country Music Hall
Of Fame - along with publisher Fred Rose and Jimmie Rodgers - on November 3rd,
1061.

Q: I heard on the radio about some country music guy named "Curly" passing
away. Do you have any information?
A: Songwriter Curly Putman, who wrote hits including Tammy Wynette's
"D-I-V-O-R-C-E" and George Jones' "He Stopped Loving Her Today," died recently
at age 85. A member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (since 1976) and
the Alabama Music Hall of Fame (since 1993), Putman — whose given name was
Claude Putman Jr. — was born in Princeton, Ala., on Nov. 20, 1930. His
first big hit came in 1965 - Porter Wagoner's "Green, Green Grass of Home," a
song that has since been covered by Bobby Bare, Tom Jones, Charley Pride,
the Statler Brothers, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and others. In 1967, Wynette
and David Houston took Putman's "My Elusive Dreams" — co-written by Billy
Sherrill — to No. 1 on the country charts; one year later, "D-I-V-O-R-C-E" —
co-written by Bobby Braddock — hit No. 1. Dolly Parton recorded Putman's
"Dumb Blonde" for her 1967 debut album, Hello, I'm Dolly, and Tanya Tucker, TG
Sheppard and Moe Bandy also scored hits with Putman- penned tunes ("Blood
Red and Goin' Down," "Do You Wanna Go to Heaven" and "It's a Cheatin'
Situation," respectively). His biggest hit, however, came in 1980, when
Jones released "He Stopped Loving Her Today," co-written by Braddock. The song
went to No. 1 and earned a Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance,
ACMs for Single of the Year and Song of the Year and two CMAs for Song of the
Year (first in 1980, then again in 1981).

Q: Did Ronnie Milsap record the Johnny Rodriguez hit song "Pass Me By?" My
wife says she heard it on the radio several times.
A: Milsap's version of "Pass Me By" is in his1973 "Where My Heart Is" album

Q: My dad's favorite song was Jimmy Dickens "May The Bird Of Paradise Fly Up
Your Nose." Do you know who wrote it?
A: The song was written by Neal Merritt.

Q: I have a part of a song recorded from the radio years ago and the guy is
singing "That's Me Without You." Do you know his name?
A: "That's Me Without You" was Sonny James' first charted song and peaked at
number 9 in 1953.

FAREWELL TO AN OLD FRIEND. (2004.)
By: Jack Blanchard

Winnie has been through a lot of adventures with us,
over so many years... good times and bad.
It's hard to say goodbye.
I don't know if you get attached to "inanimate objects",
but we do.
After they've been with you a long time,
they have personality and feelings.

Winnie was never inanimate until her last few years.
She was always on the go,
scurrying across 48 of our big beautiful states
from one show to the next.

Winnie is short for Winnebago, our home away from home.
We adopted her when she was gloriously new,
with zero miles on her odometer.
But eventually she got old,
and last week we had her towed away.
It's like having your dog put to sleep.

Many famous stars have joined us at Winnie's kitchen table.
One morning I was in the bathroom when Misty called to me:
"Jack, George and Tammy are here".
Among the other visitors were Waylon Jennings, Grampa Jones,
Archie Campbell, Skeeter Davis, Faron Young,
Conway Twitty, and on and on.

Winnie should have been bronzed
and put in the Hall of Fame.
There should have at least been a funeral ceremony.
Can bagpipes play country music?

Maybe we're crazy, but we said some teary goodbyes,
patted her walls affectionately,
and thanked her for the years of fun and comfort.
We left before she was towed away by a wrecker,
probably to a junkyard.
We couldn't watch.

We still feel sad when we think of her, and even a little guilty.
Winnie was a big part of our life.
She took care of us,
and the very least I could do was write this.

View From The Front Porch-Stan Hitchcock

In 1962, when I first arrived in Nashville, one of the first people I met was a
young disc jockey by the name of Chuck Lowrance (Chuck Lowe), a giant of a man,
and a giant as a friend. As I continued my Music Career, Chuck moved from
station to station, becoming one of the top Country Music dj's in Atlanta,
Orlando, Little Rock, Saint Louis and Nashville. Chuck never failed to take my
music to wherever he was working at the time, and through the years we became
like brothers. Chuck retired from radio several years ago and he and his wife
moved to Wears Valley, Tennessee...on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountain Park.
Chuck and I shared a love for fishing and we traveled around enjoying the great
waters of Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky and Wisconsin. A couple of years ago we
started a company we called Chuck and Stan Classic Country Foods.
This year, Chuck didn't get to come with me to Wisconsin in September, as he had
done for the past few years to fish the Upper Mississippi River. In September,
while I was there fishing, as usual, back in Tennessee Chuck started hurting in
his back and hip and we figured he had the same thing I had been suffering
from...ruptured disc and Spinal Stenosis. This week the pain got so bad he went
to the Emergency Room in Knoxville and they did a Cat-Scan. We were wrong...it
wasn't his back or hip. Chuck has Liver Cancer. While we try to figure out how
we can fight this thing that has invaded this gentle giant of a man, would you
please take the time to lift up my old friend in prayer for healing for him and
strength for Nancy his wife, and for Denise and I who love them both. With best
friends, when one hurts, the other hurts too. This one really hurts. stan

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Give your love of justice to the king, O God, and righteousness to the king's
son. Help him judge your people in the right way; let the poor always be treated
fairly.
– Psalm 72:1-2 (NIV)
