STORY BEHIND THE SONG*
*
Ideas for songs come from the most unlikely places and according to David
Bellamy - The Bellamy Brothers 1980 number one, "Sugar Daddy," was one of those
tunes!
David commented, "the idea for "Sugar Daddy" actually came from the parking lot
of a Howard Johnson's in Knoxville, Tennessee. I was just sitting there on the
parking lot waiting on a limo to pick us up and take us to a radio station for
an interview. I couldn't help hearing this couple arguing. The hood of her car
was up and they were trying to get it started. The guy commented that the girl
needed a new car to which she commented, "No, what I really need is a sugar
daddy."
That comment stuck in David's mind and he later wrote the song that became The
Bellamy Brothers' second number one.
Howard and David's Warner/Curb single "Sugar Daddy" entered the country charts
February 2nd, 1980 and was in the top slot on April 5th.
It was their 8th charted song and was on the charts for 14 weeks.*

FROM OUR DISTANT PAST.*
By: Jack Blanchard
I searched through our old recordings
and found something special...
a scratched up acetate disc from our distant past.
When Misty Morgan and I first played music together,
we were playing at the Downtowner Bar in Key West FL,
in the early 1960s,
and somebody in the audience caught this minute of our music
on a tape recorder, probably an old Webcor.
When we got back to Miami
we took the little reel of tape to a studio
to have it put on an acetate disc to play on our hi-fi at home.
For you younger readers:
A "hi-fi" was the I-pod of the day,
only made of rocks.
If there was any writing on the disc label
it has long been faded away,
and the old recording has a lot of scratches
and a skip in the middle.
I haven't attempted to get the surface noise out. It keeps it real.
Acetate discs don't usually last one year, much less over forty.
The third musician in our trio was guitarist Doug Tarrant.
We played a lot of kinds of music,
including rock & roll, jazz, standards, and current hits.
Misty and I hadn't even thought of singing duets on stage yet.
The year that we first played at the Downtowner in Key West,
Misty was playing an instrument that is now extinct
and out of memory.
The Lowrey Organo was an attachment
that you hooked up to a piano,
and turned it into an organ with left-hand bass.
We rented them from other musicians until we could buy our own.
We were singing into CB radio microphones,
because that's all we could afford.
Even so. it sounded okay... like an old fashioned telephone.
Doug was playing his original Les Paul model guitar,
and getting the latest techno sound with an Echofonic,
probably the first tape echo device ever marketed for live performance.
We were pretty hip for the Dark Ages.
We loved the music of Les Paul and Mary Ford, and on this clip
we are doing "The World is Waiting for the Sunrise".
It's a bit of our musical past...
a minute of our life almost forgotten.
Terrible audio quality, but a great bit of our history

VIEW FROM THE FRONT PORCH
By: Stan Hitchcock*
December 15, 1964, Nashville, Tennessee.
*
Uncle Willie Potts came to work that Monday morning, at the television station
where we all worked, doing a early morning show, five days each week from 6AM to
8AM. Uncle Willie had a bruise upside his head on the left side, and a matching
one on the right side. ...
I caught Uncle Willie first, as he came in the studio door, never knowing what
new adventure he had to share with us, and true or made up it was a hoot, in his
amble down a different path than most people would ever know.
Well, Uncle Willie, what in the world have you been up too this weekend? From
the looks of your head, whatever it was.you lost. He took his coat off and sat
down on the piano bench by the piano that he played so well, in his other life
as David Reece, piano player, songwriter, singer and Gospel Music Legend.
Well, I did have a bit of difficulty on Saturday while I was out finishing up my
Christmas shopping., he leaned back and closed his eyes, seeming to get a better
picture of whatever it was that had happened, I went downtown to Harveys
Department Store, and I got on the escalator to go up to the third floorthere
was a rather large woman on the escalator just ahead of meI couldnt help
noticing that her dress had got hung in her panty girdle, and was hiked up
pretty far in the back.well, I felt bad for her, and thinking to help her outI
reached up, ever so gently, and pulled the dress out of the girdlewhen I did,
she turned around and whopped me upside the head.well, I could see that she must
have wanted to wear it that awayso I reached up to put it back inthats what
happened to the other side.
Uncle Willie learned the hard way.you just cannot please some folks, no matter
how hard you try.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:*
*
I said to myself, Look, I have increased in wisdom more than anyone who has
ruled over Jerusalem before me; I have experienced much of wisdom and knowledge.
Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom, and also of madness and
folly, but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind. *
