STORY BEHIND THE SONG*
*
*
According to record producer Larry Butler - "In all my years in the music
business - very few songs ever brought tears to my eyes but Kenny Rogers' 1979
number one "She Believes In Me" was one that did."
The song was written by Steve Gibb.
Butler added, "I was in my office late one night - listening to songs for
Kenny's The Gambler" album. About 2:30 in the morning - I put the She Believes
In Me" tape on the machine and played it. Tears came to my eyes and I stopped
the tape - rewound it and played it again. I wondered if I liked the song
because it was about a songwriter but I decided that the song could apply to
just about anybody - so I put it in the box to keep - played it for Kenny - he
liked it so we recorded it."
Kenny Rogers' United Artists single "She Believes In Me" came on the country
music charts April 21st, 1979 and was in the top slot on June 9th and was there
for two weeks.
It was his 15th charted song on the country charts and also peaked at number
five on the pop charts.

A BITTERSWEET SONG.*
By: Jack Blanchard
I like to write songs that cheer people up,
or entertain in some way.
I also like to write songs that make us think,
and are not always cheery.
I especially like bitter-sweet songs like "He Stopped Loving Her Today",
and "Yesterday When I was Young".
I seem to write a lot of those.
I guess they express something that I need to get out of my system.
Here's a comment from an email friend:
"Your song 'Shadows Of The Leaves' is one of the most touching and beautiful,
as well as one of the most difficult songs to listen to, that I've ever heard.
When I hear it I think of how my widowed mom feels
when I take her to the cemetery.
It makes me think about all those whom I have loved and lost
and who now drift on the winds of my memories.
It makes me think of those whom I love and still have...
and to appreciate them more.
Thanks for such a beautiful song and beautiful rendition.
It makes one think."

And here are the words:
*"SHADOWS OF THE LEAVES."*
(He sings):
Life was never easy, but when troubles came along,
Together we could take 'em in our stride.
Through the good times and the tears,
through all the passing years,
night and day, you never left my side.
Now the shadows of the leaves on the grass beneath the trees
are the only things that move across the lawn,
as I stand here all alone
and read the words upon the stone,
I begin to realize you're really gone.
(She sings):
Don't think it's just your troubled mind if suddenly you find
that something brushed away the bitter tears you've cried.
If you feel something touch your face
and disappear without a trace,
And leave a warm familiar feeling by your side.
It's not the shadows of the leaves in the early autumn breeze,
As they blow along the grass that summer dried.
Through the good times and the tears,
through the autumn of your years,
Night and day, I'll never leave your side.
(Together):
Oh, the shadows of the leaves in the early autumn breeze
As they blow along the grass that summer dried;
Through the good times and the tears,
through all the passing years,
Night and day, I'll never leave your side.

Charlie that he could not sing that song on the show, because it might offend
the Muslim community. Charlie Daniels, an American Patriot, cancelled his
appearance on the show.

View From The Front Porch*-*
Stan Hitchcock*
*
I grew up in old, wooden country churches. The first time I ever sung a song, in
public, would have been in that old country church.
Just a kid, but learning to sing loud, to reach the back pew where old Mr.
Wilson would be sitting, sound asleep, as I tried to wake him with song.
Our family lived equal distance between two different churches, an old fashioned
Methodist and an old fashioned, Baptist. The one, New Salem Methodist Church, we
attended in my younger years, then switched to the New Hope Baptist Church,
later. I was active in the youth programs of both churches, and in those years,
both churches taught the same, solid rock fundamental gospel.
Years have passed since those days in the 40's and 50's, and great changes in
rules and regulations of both the Methodist and the Baptist organizations. The
changes, not so much theology as political and lifestyle acceptance, have
occurred in all the major denominations and caused many local congregations to
divide and split in disagreements.
But, in those early days, the attendance of two different denominations was a
seamless shifting between Christians of like faith. The Methodists had a great
Youth program, and my guitar and young voice was welcome at campfire gatherings,
singings at the Old Folks homes, caroling at the Christmas season at different
older folks homes, standing in the snow outside their windows softly singing,
"Silent Night".....good memories.
So it was, in 1993, two years after the sale of CMT, I determined that I was
going to try to recapture the sounds of music that I remembered from those old
wooden churches of my childhood.
I called my lifelong friend, Bobby Joe Bilyeu (Bob Bilyeu), to come down to
Branson, where we had relocated at the time, and talk to me about a television
show idea. I explained to Bob that I wanted to find some old country churches,
with the ancient wood seasoned and resonant like a fine violin or guitar, and
bring in gospel groups to do their music there and get that old sound that I
remembered. Bob has spent most of his life in gospel music, knows everything
about it and has the pleasing personality that would show well on tv screens.
Bob jumped into the project with both feet and together we created a show
called, "The Old Country Church". It still remains one of my very favorite
series that I have had a part in.
Church Politics has always been something that bothers me. It seems that most of
the major denominations are more interested in internal matters of control of
their members than in the simple gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and the promise
of Eternal Life. Thankfully, there are still strong churches out there that
practice their Faith without getting carried away with denominational squabbles.
Denise and I found such a church in First Baptist Church of Gallatin, Tennessee,
but we also found the same loving spirit at Branson Methodist when we lived
there. Finding a place of worship, with like minded people of Faith is so
important to a healthy lifestyle. Surrounding yourself with friends and
neighbors that gather every week to pray together and care about what is
happening in your life, and together, turning it all over to the Lord, is a
strength builder like no other.
The old country church that Bob found in Cave Springs, MO was everything that I
had hoped for in the production of our television series. "The Old Country
Church" television show still goes on today, on our network of BlueHighways TV,
and it has recaptured the sound that I remember so well, of the old wooden
churches of my childhood. In those days when it didn't matter what denominations
name was on the outside of the building, the Spirit of God was with the people
inside.
