STORY BEHIND THE SONG*

*

According to Mac McAnally, he already had the hook and the melody in mind for
Alabama's 1981 number one "Old Flame" before he talked to Donny Lowery about
working on the song with him.

McAnally commented, "I was concerned that the whole thing would wind up as a pop
song if I tried to finish it alone - and I didn't want that - so I talked to
Donny about writing it with me."

After they finished the song - co-writer Donny Lowery actually took the song to
Alabama after the group had performed in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.

The group liked the song and bumped another song out of the lineup for the
"Feels So Right" album to make room for "Old Flame."

The song was the first to be released from the album as a single, entered the
country music charts February 14th, 1981 and was in the top slot on April 18th.

"Od Flame" was Alabama's 6th charted song and their 3rd number one.

THE MUSIC ROW MURDER. *

By: Jack Blanchard

I was contacted by NBC Television News.
The reporter told me they were working on a story about Nashville,
and they had learned that Misty and I had been friends with Chuck Dixon.
Could I tell them about Chuck, or give any insights?
She said nothing about the so-called Music Row Murder trial.

I thought about it and sent this reply by email:
"Is this about the Cash Box scandal?
She wrote back, saying "Yes, it is".

I responded again with this:
"We were friends with Chuck Dixon for the last three or four years of his life.
He was very kind to us,
and went out of his way to encourage and help us.
We have nothing to tell you.
We feel that his family has gone through enough."

The headlines came out that the trial has started.
"Prosecution: Researcher killed on Music Row
for trying to reform crooked business."
"Kevin Hughes was gunned down
outside a Music Row recording studio March 9, 1989."
Chuck Dixon was mentioned in the story in a negative way.

I got a similar phone call from ABC News.
I told them the same thing.
"Sorry. All we know about Chuck Dixon is good stuff.
You may have to talk to somebody else."

One thing I forgot to mention:
My daughter Michele was the receptionist at Cashbox at that time.
The day before the shooting
somebody warned her not to come to work the next day.

VIEW FROM THE FRONT PORCH

By: Stan Hitchcock*

My coffee tasted extra good this morning, the dollop of honey giving it just the
right flavor to sweeten my morning. *

Speaking of fishingwhat, yall didnt mention fishing? I could have swore I heard
someone mention fishingoh, well, just humor me a little, ok?*

I was going to go fishing today, However, I decided to wait until next week,
when we are going back to Wisconsin, and I, and my fishing partner, Chuck
Lowrance, can fish the Upper Mississippi River one more time before cold weather
seals up that waterway good and solid. So, until then, I reckon Im left to just
dream about past fishing adventures.lets see now.1969-1970, somewhere about
then.on tour in Central Florida.hmmmm*

The man that owned the supper club where I was appearing for a week, had put me
up out at a fishing camp on a lake that looked to be just made for a country boy
fishing. On tour, no matter where, I always carried a fishing rod and some
tackle, just in case a fishing opportunity suddenly appeared. This was gonna be
great cause I had never fished Florida before. *

The first morning, I got up early, put on a pair of cutoff jeans and tee shirt,
got my old tennis shoes out, the ones that I used for wading the creeks of
Tennessee, and headed for the lake. I figured, since the lake looked pretty
shallow, I could just wade along, just past the weed bed that bordered the
shoreline, and catch one of them big Florida bass I had heard so much about from
Bare and Porter, who fished down here a lot. I started wading out, getting up to
about my waist in water, and got to fishing, and when I get to fishing, I blot
everything else out of my mind. About an hour later, I had waded a long way from
the dock, where I started, catching a few small bass, but none of the big ones I
wanted. I was standing in waist deep water, when something really big hit me in
the legs, knocking me back into the watersputtering and grabbing my hat, which
was bobbing on the surface, I thought, Man, that must have been one of them
really big Florida bass!! Faintly, I realized that someone was hollering, way
back on the dock. I turned to look back there, and saw a man, on the dock,
waving his arms and hollering at me. I couldnt make out what he was hollering,
so I started wading back that way. As I got closer, I started picking up a few
wordsCome out . wateralligator.alligator Alligator? What the heck did he
meanAlligator? As I got closer I could see he was pointing behind me, still
hollering Alligator! I turned to look in the direction he was pointing, behind
me. There, floating on the surface, in the exact spot where I thought I had been
knocked down by the big Florida Basswas an alligator about as long as I am tall.
As I climbed out of the water at the dockthis nice gentlemanwho was looking at
me like I was the dumbest hillbilly he had ever seen,,,,explained to me, in no
uncertain terms, that I was lucky to still have my two legs under meand that the
good folks in Central Florida did not fish in these lakes like we do in
Tennesseecause the Alligators will eat you plumb up. Uh huh, wade fishing in
Florida, means you are the bait, and when you get caught by an alligator, you
start getting around on one of them little boards with wheels on them, or maybe
not around at all. *

Well, enough of those pleasant memories of wade fishing in Florida, cause I have
graduated to bass boats as my choice vehicle for the search for the largemouth
and smallmouth bass. I have not fished for alligators since then, but I do,
sometimes, dream about having one of them big suckers on the end of an
ultra-light rodyeah, I can see it nowbring one of them beauties home for supper
and surprise everyone.*

Well, Old Buck The Collie has now returned from his deer chasin and settled down
at my feetwhich makes me thankful I still got feet or else he wouldnt have
anyplace he liked to lay. *

Just another day in the life of an old hillbilly on the porchwatching his
country world go by, at a pace that is definitely not the fast lane, giving time
for an old man and his memories..Yes, it is a blessed day. *

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:*

*

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God even
as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but
the good of many, so that they may be saved. *
