STORY BEHIND THE SONG*

*

As the story goes Elvis Presley had heard Jerry Reeds recording of Guitar Man
and wanted to record the song. And in the studio he told producer Felton Jarvis
that he wanted his recording to sound like Jerry Reeds record! Jarvis replied
that in order to sound like Reeds record, they would have to get Jerry Reed in
the studio to play guitar - since no other guitar picker could play the song
like Reed played it.*

According to Reed, So Felton Jarvis called me to pick guitar on Elviss recording
of Guitar Man, my song ! So I went in and tuned up hit the intro and away we
went. We only did two takes on the song and it was done!*

As far as the idea for Guitar Man I have no idea where that song came from! I
was messin around with my guitar one day and the song just came! All my songs
were written around a guitar. Im a guitar picker. Thats what I do. Thats all I
know how to do! I dont know how to do anything else. If it hadnt been for my
guitar Id still be makin $39 a week in that cotton mill back in Georgia.*

Jerry Reeds RCA Victor single Guitar Man came on the country charts May 20th,
1967 and peaked at number 53 and was on the charts for nine weeks.*

Elvis Presleys recording of Guitar Man featuring Jerry Reeds guitar work came on
the country charts January 17th, 1981 and made it to number one. It was on the
country charts for 13 weeks and also scored a number 43 on the pop music
charts.*

FRAMES.*

By: Jack Blanchard

(This piece was written a couple of years ago
and many readers responded with positive comments,
so here it is again.)
*
FRAMES.
*
A famous photographer was set up on a scenic overlook
to shoot the beautiful sunset.
A stranger walked up beside him
and gazed silently at the gorgeous sky.
After a couple of minutes the stranger said this:
"It's almost like a painting."
The photographer said: "Yes. Nature's catching up."

Life is a picture without a frame.
There's too much to see to really appreciate it.
We see life best when it comes in little sections
cleverly framed so we know what to focus on.
It's easier for us to see the tree than the forest.

In olden days it was the fashion
for hikers on nature walks to carry wooden picture frames.
When they came upon a beautiful vista,
they would look at it through the frames,
blocking out the not so pretty things,
and adjusting the frame to see only the best parts,
in artistic balance...like a painting.

Frames are interesting.
On television they make a picture shorter from top to bottom
and we think we're seeing a panorama.
Hair styles are designed to frame the face.
When we "frame" somebody for a crime,
we focus suspicion upon them.

Stories and songs frame parts of life for us to understand...
showing us life with order and meaning,
and not showing us the ugly or boring parts.
People in story and song seldom sleep or go to the bathroom,
because they are not important to the plot.
Every line is written to add to the continuity,
and take the action to a satisfying ending.

Real life doesn't have many good endings.
It usually peaks somewhere around the middle,
and then just wanders off,
but the authors are smart enough to stop at a high point.
Stories give us life we can understand...in a frame.
Bite size.

I don't mean to say life can't be fun, inspiring, tragic, hilarious,
noble, evil, and interesting in every way.
It is, and I love it.
But it's often more interesting when we look back on it.
Our memory is selective.
It forgets the boring parts.

Artists, composers, and writers help us to find meaning,
or the illusion of meaning,
in a world that appears pretty random to the naked eye.
I do this kind of thing for a living. It's my life's work,
and I'm glad I didn't listen to the well-meaning people
who advised me to give up this nonsense,
and get a real job.

Music, literature, poetry, and art help us to to get a frame
around this life we find ourselves in.

VIEW FROM THE FRONT PORCH

By: Stan Hitchcock*

*

*

*As the strong cold front moves across the Mississippi River, a wonderful
cool breeze*

* wafts across the water and up to where our RV sits on the hill
overlooking the River. Sitting here enjoying my first cup of coffee with my
Bride and fellow coffee lover, with Old Buck The Collie laying at our feet, I am
filled with the Joy of another day, and the blessings of our life. To have a
companion like Denise, a dog like Old Buck, a life of Adventure, still after all
these years, I truly am a blessed man. *

*As I take another drink of coffee, I look up to see an Eagle sailing on
the upper winds, against the dark storm clouds over the River. This land of Milk
and Cheese is truly a wonderland of nature.*

*So, I let the peace and contentment of another morning fill me with new
hope. With all the violence and trouble in this old world, a person needs to
find hope wherever he can. Mine is in a prayerful attitude of thankfulness of a
morning...having my coffee, wherever I might be, on my Front Porch or an RV
concrete slab facing the River...or driving across America in search of
Adventure...looking out across another morning and knowing that whatever
comes...God Is In Control. Surely a God that has known me since I was conceived
in my Mother's womb...a God who watches over the lowly Sparrow...Surely the God
who made it all...will take time in His busy day, to watch over me. For, even
though I might feel insignificant in my own eyes, to God we are all Precious,
and created in His Image. *

*Thank you Lord, for sending the Eagle sailing by, the cool breeze across
my face, the waters of the Mighty Mississippi moving by on the way South...Your
Nature is working fine...It's just Man that needs to be jerked up and
straightened out...a Terrorist is just another of the Devil's tools to wreck
havoc on mankind, and we all know that Someday Soon, You will return to sweep
the Devil, and his henchmen, all into the a Burning Lake Of Fire, to be
contained Forever in their Torment. *

*So, I don't choose to spend the morning watching the News as another
inhuman act is committed upon the Innocent, somewhere in this World. Instead, I
choose to spend my morning with the Eagles, for as you say Lord, in the Book Of
Isaiah, Chapter 40, "They That Wait Upon The Lord, Shall Renew Their Strength,
They Shall Mount Up With Wings Like An Eagle, They Shall Run And Not Be Weary,
They Shall Walk And Not Faint."....man, I haven't come all this way to give up
and faint away, no sir, I'm gonna spend time with the Eagles, and someday
soon...I'm gonna Fly away Home. *
