                                     STORY   BEHIND   THE   SONG

The idea for a lot of hit songs have come from  other songs and according to Johnny Rodriguez, the idea for his 1973 number one, “You Always Come Back To Hurting Me” came while he was writing lyrics on paper for Tom T. Hall.

Rodriguez commented, “I was sort of the secretary for Tom T. when we were on the road. I was playing guitar in his band at the time.  He’d get an idea for a song, and I would write the lyrics down on paper for him.  He was working on a song at the time—I don’t remember which one—and I got the idea for “You Always Come Back To Hurting Me” while he was writing.

Later he helped me finish the song and it was the first song that we co-wrote and it turned out to be a hit!”

His Mercury records single, “You Always Come Back To Hurting Me” made the country charts March 31st, 1973 and made it to number one.

It was his 2nd charted song and his 1st number one.  The single was on the charts for 16 weeks.

Hey, Doug, I'd be willing to bet I know why you got the question of how many Glaser Brothers there were/are.  Pretty early on, Chuck spent some time in the army and Joe Babcock "was" Chuck during that time, including on at least one album cover.  I can easily imagine somebody seeing several photos that show two different configurations of faces and wondering just how many of those guys were there, anyhow.  Bonus info:  Chuck Glaser met Jimmy Payne while in the army, encouraging Jimmy to move to Nashville after being discharged.  Jimmy went on to co-writer "Woman, Woman" with Jim Glaser.  Jimmy also had a niece who was married to John Hartford, who ... well, we certainly know THAT story!!!  Well, actually his name was Harford but Chet Atkins suggested he add a "t" as most people would hear it and spell it that way.

So Chuck's military service was quite propituous:  he served his country AND the entertainment endeavor quite abundantly.

More  soon.

Doug:

If you didn't put anything else in your work, but the story of how songs come about, it would still be a jewel......they are SO interesting......I've always been interested in song writers (since GOOD song writers just think differently than us normal every day folks). And, after reading of "Guess Things Happen That Way", I can't believe that Marty didn't record that.......it would have been a natural.......in the middle of reading that, I could HEAR Marty singing it, (and, still can, as, it's on my mind).......it's just like I've heard him sing it........but, I really loved what Johnny Cash did with it..........

Thanks for all you do.....

Ted H.

I write more songs during the remnants of the year…
when emotions are nearer to the surface,
the past is just over our shoulder,
and old voices whisper in our ear.
Here’s one of those songs.

WHEN THE BLUES COME IN FROM THE RAIN.

                        By: Jack Blanchard

When the river's runnin' gray,
On a dark and cloudy day,
And the winds that bring October
Make the weeds and reeds and cattails sway...
Thinking my life over,
I see your face again,
When the Blues Come In From the Rain

When the leaves are coming down
On the sidewalks wet and brown,
And the cars all have their lights on
As they make their way back home from town,
Time may fade your picture,
But it sure don't dull the pain,
When the Blues Come In From the Rain.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not sayin' I'm to blame
Just the same, I've got an empty feeling inside.
Sometimes I'd like to break right down and call your name,
But all that I've got left now is my pride.

When the Blues Come In From the Rain,
And your face appears,
The tears are only raindrops on my window pane.
Still, if I could live life over,
I'd go back the way we came...
When the Blues Come In From the Rain

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

LITTLE THINGS

The little things that mean so much…

A word…a note…a special touch

Can make the day and warm the heart

Of one whose life is set apart…

Be grateful still for special friends

Whose caring…never ends!
