STORY BEHIND THE SONG

Back in the days before multi-track recording when everyone heard on a record
were all in the studio at the same time - some artists preferred "closed
sessions" -

meaning only the singers and the musicians - with an engineer - were in the
studio during a recording session - while other artists preferred "the more the
merrier."

According to Chet Atkins - most Eddy Arnold recording sessions were "closed
sessions" because Arnold preferred it and did not want the songwriters in the
studio

during his sessions because they would try to tell him how to sing the song.

Atkins commented, "But I remember Eddy just seemed to sing better with a few
pretty girls around. I discovered that during the session when he recorded
"Somebody

Like Me." A couple of the office girls came into the control room to deliver
some paperwork and Eddy just seemed to perk up when they came in. So I invited
them to stay

and watch the session and Eddy sort of put on a show while they were there. He
even became a little animated and would dance around when the girls were there.
So I'd

make sure that a few girls from the office were in the control room for all his
sessions. We finished recording "Somebody Like Me" after Eddy did two or three
extra takes

after the girls came in."

Eddy Arnold's "Somebody Like Me" entered the country music charts October 15th,
1966 and made it to number one and stayed there for four weeks.

NOTHING IS OVER LIKE CHRISTMAS.
By: Jack Blanchard

Nothing is over like Christmas.
Months of anticipation, and then it's gone.
Try to hold on to it and it slides away like a morning dream.
It's Christmas Day and there are no holiday programs on TV.
Not even football in the snow.

It's hard to work up the spirit here in Florida,
but we give it a shot every year.
Misty decorates a tree, and puts Christmas stuff all over the place.
We listen to Christmas music with the air conditioning on
and with palm trees lurking in the front yard.

I get very sentimental about Christmas,
probably because I had real Christmasy holidays years ago,
with folks who are no longer with us,
and my immature subconscious thinks it will happen again.

I toss up futile prayers for snow here in the subtropics,
but this is the time of year
when we just get a cheap imitation of autumn.
A couple of trees around here have a touch of red,
and I go look at them.

Television doesn't help with reports of all night sales,
talking heads urging us to be good consumers,
stranded travelers sleeping in airports,
and carolers singing "Happy Honda Days".

The people who tell us that it's a pagan holiday,
just because it's near the winter solstice,
may not realize what an intrusion that is upon our enjoyment.
I think we can each bring our own spirituality and memories
to the season,
and make it our personal non-pagan celebration.
It's in the spirit of the beholder.

Misty is saving the day
by making an old fashioned Christmas dinner.
I'm setting our bathroom scales back ten pounds.

I think I'll write a letter to Santa,
and ask him for one more snowy Christmas in Buffalo,
where the night is silent,
the homes are warm,
and the feeling is strong in the air.

Late Night At The Old Farm House-Stan Hitchcock

The days between Christmas and New Years are always kinda nostalgic to me…the
awareness that another year is almost through…so fast it is like a flash..and
it's gone.

The feeling makes me linger on the happenings of the year, and they are many,
marking them down in the place where memories live…so they will not be
forgotten. This
summer was a great one for my friend and partner Chuck Lowrance and I as we
fished one more time on the Upper Mississippi River, having the best time with
not a care
in the World. Three months later he was diagnosed with Stage Four Cancer. So, I
like to think on the good times, not the bad, and trust that he and I might do
it again this
coming year.

We had a new Grandaughter, Scarlett, born almost a year ago and she is a joy to
Denise and I and anyone else that is around her. Scott and Rachel have done a
marvelous job of birthin' and raisin' this young'un.

We lost our good dog Buck the Collie this year…and gained the Aussie Calamity
Jane. Alfred The Cat rides herd on the dogs, Buck when he was still with us…and
now
Calamity. We had Old Buck for 14 years and it was really hard to give him up…and
as we dug his grave, down by the creek that he loved, laid him to rest and
covered the grave…going back to the house I got a cup of coffee and went out to
sit on the Porch…I looked down to the Resting Place and there I saw Calamity
Jane and Alfred The Cat…both laying stretched out on Buck's Grave mound. They
lay there for about 30 minutes and them got up and came to the house. I believe
they were grieving for their
friend…and saying goodbye. Animals know such things.

I lost many good friends this year, and did my own grieving…but, I know we shall
meet again, and it will be A Glad Reunion Day.

Rest well tonight my friends, pray and love one another…and Thank The Master for
another year. stan

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get
up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there
until I tell you,
for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him." So he got up, took the
child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt,
