STORY BEHIND THE SONG*

*

*

A lot of hit songs have been written while driving to or from somewhere and
according to Johnny MacRae , Conway Twitty's 1980 number one, "I'd Love To Lay
You Down," was started while driving the 30 mile trip home from a songwriting
session with fellow writer Bob Morrison.

MacRae commented "I came up with the idea and wrote the chorus and first verse
while driving home that night. I finished the song while jogging the next
morning. I think a lot of women would like somebody to feel the sentiment in
that song. The title gets your attention but there's more to the song than that.
Love can get a little stale at times and I think women just like to feel that
they can still turn the guy on - even though she's a housewife."

Conway Twitty's MCA single "I'd Love To Lay You Down" came on the country music
charts February 2nd, 1980 and was at the top of the list on March 29th.

It was Conway's 54th charted song and his 29th number one.*

NAME DROPPING...*

By: Jack Blanchard

I met Arnold Palmer in the 1970s.
I just saw him on TV.
One of us has matured a bit.

Misty welcomed George Jones and Tammy Wynette into our motor home
while I was in the bathroom.
Misty called out, "Oh, Jack,... George and Tammy are here."

I had dinner with Joe DiMaggio,
and Misty and I had a drink with Richard Nixon.
They never called us after that.
We feel so used!

Herb Shriner once waved to us.

I met Jo Ann Pflug in J.C. Penney's.
We pretended we didn't see each other.
(Go ahead. Google her.)

Jackie Gleason and I debated spiritualism for 12 minutes on TV.
I let him win.
There's a video of it around here someplace.
Maybe we'll find it when we move next week.

LIFE GOES ON...

We drove out to our new place today
and took a bunch of things that we don't want to go in the moving van.
Things that might break,
and expensive clothes that we wore in the 1970s on national TV.
We pretty much decided where everything will go in the living room.
Misty is enjoying it.
I am too, but I'm worn out from carrying boxes.

The new neighbors seem to know who we are. It gets around.
I hope our music isn't too loud for these folks.

Misty walked around the place and came back with oranges.
We have an orange tree.

Funny, the more we drive this route the shorter it seems to get.
Familiar roads are always shorter.

Got the car fixed... $526.36.
It should be good for another 100,000 miles.
It was a water pump, a thermostat and gasket,
a belt, fresh coolant, and a new battery.
It's running like a top.
I wish it would run like a car.

ODDS AND ENDINGS...

We were rehearsing a song and the key was too high.
I tried to hit a high C
and walked with my knees together for a week.

I'm going to to get this tattoo on my lower back...
"If you can read this you're too close."

SIGNS...
"FOR YOUR SAFETY...
PLEASE DON'T FEED THE BAND."

"WARNING! BEARS CAN RUN 35 MPH!
FASTER IF THEY ARE IN A CAR."

LAST WORD...
I like chipmunks!
Give me a good chipmunk and I'm all set.*

VIEW FROM THE FRONT PORCH

By: Stan Hitchcock*

*

From time to time, I will put some of my favorite moments in video, on my
Timeline page, as long as I feel someone wants to see the old Heart to Heart
Classics. Heart to Heart began on CMT, in the early days when my friends and I
had started the Network. I wanted to be able to just sit down with my friends
and show what kind of folks they were, good, hard working, creative people, who
had the gift to write songs. It was never anything fancy or flashy, just men and
women that loved the music. Heart to Heart started in 1986, and I have done over
150 Artists, songwriters and musicians since then...and still doing it ever now
and again. Many of the original Heart to Heart masters were destroyed, when the
Network sold to Gaylord, when the new guys came into my offices at CMT, before I
had moved everything out, and tossed them into the trash, while I was out of
town. I have recovered most of all that I did, from the first to the latest. The
Heart to Heart Library is a historic record of all the ones that came and sat
with me, just us and our guitars, for so many years. I am thankful I had the
opportunity to capture so many of the greats, many of whom have passed. It's
Raw, it ain't fancy...but you can bet on one thing...it is the real deal. *
