STORY BEHIND THE SONG*

*

*

Most recording artists are proud of the fact that they put their best foot
forward and did their best performance on each recording session.

But according to Ronnie Milsap - his 1980 number one - "Cowboys And Clowns," was
an exception!

According to Milsap: "I've never felt that I accomplished what I had hoped for
in that session. That was my first time to record in Los Angeles and I went in
and did the session according to somebody else's schedule. So I was a little
anxious to please everybody. It was a number one record - but my performance on
that session could have been better."

Ronnie Milsap's RCA Victor single "Cowboys And Clowns" came on the country music
charts June 21st, 1980 and made the top of the list August 30th.

The song was written by Steve Dorff, Snuff Garrett, Gary Harju and Larry
Herbstritt. *

*

The single was produced by Snuff Garrett, Ronnie Milsap and Rob Galbraith and
was on the charts for 16 weeks.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Q: The radio folks were talking about George Strait's final concert set some
kind of record. Do you have details?
A: Strait's final concert at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas broke the record
for an indoor concert attendance in North America - - with 105,000 in
attendance.

Q: According to my daughter - DollyParton is giving away a nights stay in her
Nashville home. What is that about?
A: Dolly Parton will once again be auctioning off a night's stay at her
Tennessee mansion complete with a part in the evening and a Dolly - cooked
breakfast - all to raise money for the Dr. Robert F. Thomas Foundation, which
supports health care in Sevier County - the county of Dolly's birth. The winning
bidder can bring along 10 additional guests. Last year's Dolly sleepover went
for $75,000.

Q: I heard on the radio that another Hank Williams movie is being made. Do you
have any information?
A: Tom Huddleston will portray Hank Williams Sr. in an upcoming biographical
movie based in Williams' biography by Colin Escott. The movie will be titled "I
Saw The Light" and is scheduled to begin production in Louisiana in October.

Q: Do you have any info on a book by Jean Shepard? It was mentioned on TV.
A: Jean Shepard's autobiography, "Down Through The Years," is now in book
stores and offers details of her personal and professional life in what she
describes as the "golden age of country music."

Q: Did Connie Smith record the song "Paper Roses?" She sang it at a concert
years ago. I've called a couple radio stations and a music store and they all
say she never recorded it.
A: Connie Smith's version of "Paper Roses" is in her 1966 "Born To Sing"
album.

Q: Have you heard a Tammy Wynette record about "It's Called Making Love?" My
sister used to sing it and she said it was on the radio back in the 70's.
A: I think the song you are referring to is "They Call It Making Love," which
was a number 6 hit for Tammy in 1979.

*/"Misty Voices: Lady Godiva"/*

*/ By: Jack Blanchard/

*Millville, Pennsylvania, has never been the same since my wife ran through
the firehouse*

*in that surprising condition.*

*We had just come from one of our better bookings at a large midwestern
fair, and were*

*looking for the town shown on our next contract: Millville. We bought
three different*

*maps. Two of them had completely overlooked our destination, and the third
showed TWO*

*Millvilles, several hundred miles apart! *

*After some grumbly long distance calls we found out that ours was the
farthest Millville,*

*so we began the long tedious job of weaving through the world's most
comprehensive*

*collection of potholes: the Pennsylvania Turnpike. *

*When we finally saw a sign pointing to Millville we were skidding around
in a sea of mud.*

*At the end of the mud was the tiny town of Millville, where we learned
that we were to*

*play at the Annual Firemen's Picnic. *

*At the picnic grounds, a Don Knottsish gentleman showed us to our stage: a
pile of logs*

*with plywood laid on top. The spotlight was a bulb hung on a pole. There
was no tent or*

*cover of any kind and the sky threatened rain. We agreed to do the show
only on the*

*condition that someone stand by with tarps to throw over our instruments
in case of a*

*storm. *

*Everyone seemed surprised when we asked where our dressing rooms were.
They opened up*

*the firehouse for us, about a mile down the road and said we could use the
back room.*

*It was hot and humid and we had to leave the doors and windows open to
survive. This*

*meant dressing in the dark as the sun was already dimming. That didn't
keep the mosquitos*

*from finding us. *

*There were hot dog stands, games, a merry-go-round and a few other
amusements on the lawn*

*and a goodly crowd was there. Hundreds of people gathered around the
makeshift stage as a*

*metallic loudspeaker barked about "show time". An elderly dwarf, who
called himself*

*"Shorty ," jumped up and down in front of the bandstand ordering the
audience to "Shut up"*

*and "Stand back, there"! He had no official capacity but the crowd didn't
know that and he*

*kept it up throughout our show. *

*The audience made up for the rest of the day and after the first show
(there were to be*

*two) they gathered 'round for autographs. We sold completely out of
records, pictures,*

*and booklets. They really ruined our sulking. *

*We were eating a chili dog when I felt a drop of rain. I looked up,
horrified, waiting*

*for another drop, and got a bucketful! We ran to the stage and tried to
get all of the*

*equipment under the canvas. The rain never let up and eventually we had to
load everything*

*back into our trailer in the rain; the second show was canceled. *

*All the firemen tried to help and everyone was running into everyone else.
We were all*

*soaking wet and the mud, now ankle deep, was spattering everywhere. Misty
was wearing a*

*brand new dress which she was trying futilely to protect with a small
plastic umbrella.*

*To her embarrassment the dress began to shrink up right before our very
eyes. *

*The "long" ruffled sleeves were creeping up past her elbows at an amazing
rate of speed.*

*The skirt, formerly a mini, was now getting ridiculous! She held the
umbrella with one*

*hand and frantically tugged at her hemline with the other. She begged me
to stand in front*

*of her, as the crowd was re-gathering. We made a mad dash for our car, not
looking back. *

*Meanwhile, back at the firehouse, the troops had gathered and were already
drinking beer,*

*playing cards and counting the day's take. I went in and explained the
situation and all*

*present agreed to turn their backs as our heroine ran the length of the
main meeting hall*

*to the back room where she had her other clothes. Firemen are real
gentlemen. *

*Later, when they offered us a beer, you'd better believe we accepted. We
stood in the*

*doorway by the fire engine, looked out into the dark, and waited for the
rain to stop. *

VIEW FROM THE FRONT PORCH

By: Stan Hitchcock*

*

Well, good morning friends and neighbors, welcome to my Front Porch...where we
try not to dwell on the Middle East Crisis...some new Virus that is spreading
from the Caribbean...twin tornadoes that devastated a little town in
Nebraska...whew...by golly it don't pay to even turn the News on of a morning
does it? Wars and rumors of Wars...ummmm...that is why I try to cleanse my mind,
each morning, sitting out here watching the Sun come up, being Thankful to God
for another beautiful day of my life...letting Nature entertain and delight
me...Old Buck The Collie lying at my feet...Denise quietly having her Bible
study, as she does each morning, not a bad way to start the day. As I drink my
coffee and enjoy my one (count it..ONE)peanut butter cookie, and reflect on my
blessings, the World's troubles seem to drop away. It's hard to be worried about
tomorrow when you are counting blessings today.*

I think, each morning, as I watch the Sunrise over the Sycamores by the creek,
that someday I may live to see Jesus as He makes His Return In The Clouds, and
we are caught up to be with Him Forever. Until that Glorious Day, I hope to be
able to enjoy His Creation, over a cup of coffee and a Peanut Butter Cookie.
