STORY BEHIND THE SONG*

*

As has been mentioned many times already - hit songs can come from just about
anywhere and/or anyone.

And Dolly Parton's 1980 number one "Starting Over Again" was co-written by the
lady known as the Queen Of Disco Donna Summer - with her husband Bruce Sudano.

According to Dolly, "My producers Gary Klein and Charles Koppelman brought the
song to me. I thought the song was great but I was just surprised to hear that
Donna Summer wrote it."

Dolly's RCA Victor single "Starting Over Again" March 22nd, 1980 and was at the
top of the list on May 24th while scoring a number 36 on the pop charts.

The single was produced by Gary Klein - was Dolly's 55th charted song and was on
the country charts for 14 weeks.*

A TICKET IN THE RACE.*

By: Jack Blanchard

I went to Nashville in the 1960's, trying to make it.
The very first words I heard from the ones who were already making it
were these: "The business has all changed.
You can't make it now. You're too late.
It used to be easy to get ahead in music but it's all different now."

Three years after I was told those words,
Misty and I were on top of the charts and winning awards.
Those people weren't consciously trying to frighten me.
I think they were just having trouble trying to
make it work with the rules they had learned,
but the rules are the first things to change.
My point, when I finally get to it, is:
Don't let 'em scare you.

I think the people most afraid of change are those
who have achieved a solid place to stand,
and now the earth is shifting under them.
Because they are afraid,
they discourage those they see as competition.

Reality is fluid.
The scenery of life changes constantly.
There is only one thing we can depend on,
and that's the thing we fear most: Change.
Relationships change, that's for sure.
If we're lucky they change into something better.
Different, but better.

Nothing will ever be the way it used to be,
and nobody knows how it's going to be
so that pretty much levels the playing field.
If anybody's got a shot, you do.
The only catch is you have to be in there trying.
You must be present to win.

There are factors at work we can't control.
Besides change, there's chaos and luck, all wild cards.
If you are really good at what you do,
work hard, and are lucky, you've got a chance.
A chance has always been enough to keep me going.
A ticket in the race.

VIEW FROM THE FRONT PORCH

By: Stan Hitchcock*

1960: The Boys Ranch was struggling to keep the boys fed, since we would not
take anything from the Government, because if we did we could not teach the love
of Jesus, as the prime tool in working with the boys. So, we were independent,
with all the challenges that brought about. I decided to put together a Benefit
Show, at the Shrine Mosque, in Springfield. I started contacting people that I
thought would help. Finally, I had a show arranged, starring the Blackwood
Brothers, The Statesmen, The LeFevres, The Waymakers and myself...and the
headliner...Tennessee Ernie Ford. We promoted it on KWTO Radio, and the night of
the show...it was a sellout. We raised several thousand dollars for the Ranch
that night, people just kept coming. I sang a song that I had recorded on the
Boys Ranch Album, called "Sorry I Never Knew You". It was a great night and I'll
always remember being on that old Shrine stage, where I had come to see all the
Opry shows that came to our town. We had about 15 or 20 boys that lived at the
Ranch at that time, and they were all sitting on stage with us. Good memories of
special times in our lives are treasures to keep forever. *

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:*

*

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are
healed. *
