STORY BEHIND THE SONG*

*

*

A lot of country music hits were recorded as album tracks - but wound up as
single releases.

Dolly Parton's 1979 number one, "You're The Only One," was one of those songs
and was a track in her "Great Balls Of Fire" album. *

*

The song was written by pop songwriter Carole Bayer Sager.

The album became Dolly's fourth gold album on November 13th, 1979.

The single debuted on the country music charts June 9th, 1979 and became Dolly's
tenth number one single during its eight week on the charts and stuck at the top
for two weeks.

The RCA Victor single was Dolly's 52nd charted song and was on the charts for 14
weeks.

The single was produced by Dolly's keyboard player Gregg Perry.*

NOTHING IS OVER LIKE CHRISTMAS.*

By: Jack Blanchard

Nothing is over like Christmas.
Months of anticipation, and then it's gone.
Try to hold on to it and it slides away like a morning dream.
It's Christmas Day and there are no holiday programs on TV.
Not even football in the snow.

It's hard to work up the spirit here in Florida,
but we give it a shot every year.
Misty decorates a tree, and puts Christmas stuff all over the place.
We listen to Christmas music with the air conditioning on
and with palm trees lurking in the front yard.

I get very sentimental about Christmas,
probably because I had real Christmasy holidays years ago,
with folks who are no longer with us,
and my immature subconscious thinks it will happen again.

I toss up futile prayers for snow here in the subtropics,
but this is the time of year
when we just get a cheap imitation of autumn.
A couple of trees around here have a touch of red,
and I go look at them.

Television doesn't help with reports of all night sales,
talking heads urging us to be good consumers,
stranded travelers sleeping in airports,
and carolers singing "Happy Honda Days".

The people who tell us that it's a pagan holiday,
just because it's near the winter solstice,
may not realize what an intrusion that is upon our enjoyment.
I think we can each bring our own spirituality and memories
to the season,
and make it our personal non-pagan celebration.
It's in the spirit of the beholder.

Misty is saving the day
by making an old fashioned Christmas dinner.
I'm setting our bathroom scales back ten pounds.

I think I'll write a letter to Santa,
and ask him for one more snowy Christmas in Buffalo,
where the night is silent,
the homes are warm,
and the feeling is strong in the air.

View From The Front Porch*-*

Stan Hitchcock*

*

I have enjoyed so many adventures, in my years of traveling. All those nights,
from six years old to 18 years old, lying in my upstairs attic bedroom at the
farm house where I grew up, listening to the steam locomotives pulling the
passenger cars across America, and traveling through a part of the Ozarks where
I could hear the lonesome whistle blow in the night. I knew, lying there
listening and dreaming of the people in the passenger cars traveling through the
nights, that someday, I too would search and find adventure in the world.

Like my travels in the Navy, when I finally reached 18, exploring the mysterious
Orient, on board ship, taking a steam locomotive and passenger cars from Chicago
to San Diego, California, taking another steam train from Long Beach, California
back home to the Ozarks, for a 30 day leave....and it was everything I had
dreamed it would be. The memory of sitting on the Fantail of my ship in Hong
Kong Harbor, and tuning my Zenith Transoceanic Radio to 650AM, on a Saturday
night, and finding the Grand Ole Opry, and Roy Acuff singing "Wabash
Cannonball"...oh, the thrill to a homesick Ozark boy, making a memory that will
never fade.

Like the time, in the 1970s, while on tour in Hawaii, meeting a Hawaiian cowboy
who raised champion quarter horses, putting me on one of his horses, he on the
other, and riding to the top of one of the volcanoes, to the very brim, and
looking out over the Island and the Ocean around it, was just breath taking, and
scary as heck, on the narrow trail that was no more than three feet across, with
a sheer cliff drop of hundreds of feet.

Hiking, in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, with Denise and our son Scott,
finding a lake, way up on the high side, fly-fishing in that lake, just Scott
and I, seeing the native trout rise, was a memory maker.

A motorcycle ride, with a buddy, in 1982, traversing the Blue Ridge Parkway and
on into the Smokies, for three days in the Spring.awesome.

1992, flying in to a remote lodge in the NorthWest Territories, and spending a
week with my Father In Law, Duane Thornburg, fishing Lake Kasba, and catching my
22 pound Lake Trout. At night, listening in awe as Duane told me stories of
World War Two, and his landing in Japan, after the big bombs had been dropped.

A trip to Honduras, in 1993, to do some Bone Fishing, and meeting an
Archeologist who was doing a Mayan dig on an Island off the coast of Honduras,
going with him and digging up some pottery pieces, and later, he giving me a
Mayan Clay Pot that he had found. Yeah, special times.

But, the most memorable drive, was in 1997. Denise and I had been living in
Branson for awhile and were looking to move back to Tennessee. We had looked at
houses until we were tired of it, and then one day, we came upon this old farm
house, driving up the long drive, past the creek and to the house.we both looked
at each other and said, We are home.

With all the adventures and travels you can enjoy, the most important one is the
drive to home. It is symbolic of our life journey, paths we take, adventures
shared, but when we make that final climb, when we awake in our Heavenly Home,
and the Father says, Come on In, son, youre Home, you will have reached the
Peak, the glad Reunion Day, and you will know that Forever, begins today. *

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:*

*

Beyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great: He
appeared in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was
preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory.
